Have had every vintage iPad from the beginning. Had gotten to the point that I could for the most part replace my corporate laptop (Windows based...yuk), using the iPad Air 2 with a Belkin keyboard. Portability at the time was key as I was in the air over 100K miles a year. When the rMB 12 inch came out, I replaced the iPad and just loved it. This year I retired and the rMB is now on the block for sale and I have moved back to the iPad Pro. Really missed the ability to read magazines properly and was very intrigued with the Apple Pencil for photography and art work. Zinnio on a laptop just doesn't do it. So I bought the 9.7 iPad Pro. Loved the screen as has been referenced many times. It was a companion to my iMac 5K machine where I did most of my photography work. Liked the portability, but found it confining after working on a 12 inch laptop for some time. Also found that the keyboard was a bit cramped and when putting up Safari with bookmarks, part of the screen was truncated. Returned the 9.7 and got a 12.9. Love this machine. Keyboard is very similar to my rMB and the extra real estate is wonderful. Magazines and Safari are much more readable. Finally the USB3 connection is way faster even with the old SD card adaptor. Never going back. Problem with these forums is that everyone's use case is different. For example a potential buyer for my rMB asked if he could hook up the machine to an Apple Thunderbolt monitor. I never hooked the rMB to anything except a charger and sometimes an SD card adapter or the Multi-port HDMI to display on a PC projector or TV. Even though retired still think I need a desktop that doesn't move, a companion device with some real estate that is mobile and a large cellphone. Might live with the 9.7 if I was still traveling, but as a companion to the iMac, the 12.9 excels and together with my iPhone 6S plus fills in all the gaps. Fortunately Apple has a 14 day return policy and you can try out whatever device and then trade up or down. BTW, find I am using my iMac less and less. This machine rocks.

LOL... well I got to the Apple store this morning and thought for $70 more outlay the 12.9" makes a lot more sense for me. So I exchanged the 9.7" - it may not be as much space as the 9.7" but I'll make the iPad Pro storage size work, especially since folks mentioned the external hard drives.

I went from a new iPad to iPad Pro 12.9" so it was quite the upgrade supposedly. $76/month for the 128gb with 2.5gb/month for 24 months.

Best deal in Australia but what convinced me was this ISP had secured the rights to the football, English league, and so it wasn't the iPad itself.

Medical textbooks look good on the 12.9" screen so far but split screen is not as useful as I thought it might be. The handwriting is fine in terms of accuracy but the ergonomics might be an issue. I guess I won't be able to carry it around the wards but it'll be good for tutorials.

Paying $165 for the pencil and $279 for the keyboard was not fun. Might return the keyboard.

So far $76/month is not fully justified and if Apple hadn't bricked the "new iPad" I'd still be using it.

I can't remember which one was called the "new iPad" -- was that 2 or 3?

I kind of agree on the split screen, I don't use it that often. But for me, the 12.9 does justify the cost, because the larger screen makes it a laptop replacement, though it doesn't replace the desktop.

and d'oh! so much for making the storage work, I ran out way too fast between apps and a couple of movies. I left off where the 32gb either left you with 29 or 27.5, it was a little over 26gb and 3 movies alone cut me down to 9gb. I don't really use iCloud.

So back to the Apple store to get the 128gb 12.9" and another pencil. I love the pencil and the screenspace. I haven't really tried the speakers yet. Learning the larger keyboard is a little bit of a learning curve.

I'll wait for the smart keyboard to go on sale, in the meantime I ordered a keys to go since folks have been positive about that.

The 12.9" is big to be sure, but the size for writing on the screen with the Pencil is great - essentially the same size and a standard pad of paper. And the higher resolution screen compared with the 9.7" models makes split screen mode in landscape orientation virtually exactly the same as two 9.7" iPads. Can't beat that.

Plus the 4GB of RAM in the 12.9" model helps future proof the investment a bit, too.

All very sound reasons to go with the 12.9". :) For me, it was a no brainer when it comes to my vision. The benefits for my eyes were worth putting out the extra money. And like you said, the RAM helps future proof the 12.9" so I can see having this for at least 3 years if not a little more. Definitely worth the price.

The first Retina display that was released in March 12 and swiftly replaced months later. I was one of those...

The battery life of the Pro 12.9" so far is good but I've been at home with wifi on and cellular off. The keyboard for typing is okay. Not having to worry about bluetooth and battery is nice. I wouldn't say it is a good keyboard though as the area feels cramped when typing and I don't have large hands.

I use my 9.7" Pro daily as my main personal computer for writing, recording, sketching, and just about everything else. I freaking love this thing.

I'd definitely go for the 12.9 inch. I actually wanted to sell my 12.9 inch iPad Pro when the 9.7 came out but after using the full potential of the screen when I was in a business meeting taking lots of notes, there was just no way I could go back to a smaller screen. Also using the iPad Pro as a second screen to my rMB makes an awesome setup when traveling.
