If you didn't need mobility, would you still get a MacBook?

Yes.

I had a desktop and a Macbook and decided to sell both and get the best MBP I could buy. It a no brainer now.
I do think maybe till about 2008 power users needed a Mac pro however they MBP are so powerfull now that they will do most things perfect. There are some people that can warrant desktops but I think they are getting fewer.
Stunning looks and build quality, pretty much industry standard compatability, lower running costs, amazing resale value and portability ofcourse etc etc.
