The internals would get upgraded as you need them (processor, RAM, camera, speakers, etc), but you'd keep the same body style (screen size, amount of cameras, dimensions, materials, etc.) forever.

Even though the body styles were similar, I decided to split up the 6/7/8 because they had different materials and weights through the years.

I voted for 4/4S because it is the best in my opinion. The next best would be 5/5S/SE.
I never liked when they changed from those to current samsung or whatever Android phone look with rounded corners, which makes phone pretty much impossible to hold securely.
There is something magical in that style and I cannot really put my finger on what it is. Because when you look at the current SE side by side with current new style iPhones, it looks outdated but when you hold one or use it without seeing one of the new style phones at the same time there is this magic again. That does not happen other way around to me and new style phone just looks and feel cheap android/samsung style to me.

My dream iPhone would be 5/5S/SE sized 4/4S body phone (ss edge with glass on both sides) with X/XS like full body display without home button of course. That would make the phone pocketable sized and possible to use with one hand and glass back allows wireless charging.
Based on what the new iPad Pro looks like, I think we will see something like that in the future but probably on the larger X/XS style size.

I went with the 3G/3GS, since it was the only one I could use without a case and not worry about damage. Love the curved design, and that thickness could hold a lot of battery now.

I voted for the 4/4S because to me its the perfect screen size for what it is, a phone. It also has a flush camera system, front and back glass, stainless steel, headphone jack. It still feels premium even to this day which is why I decided to go back and use it until ATT decides to turn off the 3G service.

I like the body style of the 5S/SE but couldn't deal with the tiny screen size and top/bottom bezels... So I guess XS Max..... But my ideal phone would be the XS Max screen with the body styling of the 5S.... Kind of like the new iPad Pro.

Had I not become accustomed to the many benefits of a larger screen for viewing and larger keyboard for typing (I am 6'7" with large hands), my vote would be the 5/5S. I loved the sturdy feel, the feel in the pocket, portability, etc. For whatever reason, it truly felt premium to me. When it comes to most product designs, I tend to prefer more of a rounded look and feel but with the 5/5S, that more rigid straight-lined feel with the chamfered edges felt great.

However, now that I am used to larger screens and one-handing a large device, I would vote for the XS Max since we are only considering body style and not things like Face ID, which I loathe.

Size for shirt pocket, the 4 was great. The 5 was taller and showed from outside.

I currently own 3 iPhones, the 7+ (used on a backup line since it is unlocked, but larger than I like), the X (my primary phone, and the one I voted for), and the SE I bought a month ago (once unlocked, it will replace the 7+). Muscle memory, I'm using the SE today, and it sure comes back. I bought the SE nearly 2 years ago, new, for my sister. And bought the SE for another person who needed a replacement phone too 1 1/2 years ago. When it became available for $200 on prepaid accounts, it was a no brainer.

The 3G was my first phone. Underpowered, and sure became obsolete fast :)

I also didn't use a case with it, and it took damage from a few drops. Plastic around buttons cracked, and the Wi-Fi became unusable for awhile after a drop (I think antenna separated). Another drop, and it became usable again. Wi-Fi that had to be next to router is not good.

It was a close call for me between the 5s/SE and the 4S. Even now I am tempted to change my vote to the 4S. Maybe because it was my first iPhone and how it felt in my hand. I dunno, can we pick two lol. The 5S/SE was a good phone too.

With both of those phones the power button was on top and to this day I don’t understand why they moved it. Also both phones fit in my pocket easily.

I ticked the 8 as I loved the all aluminium back - lasted well for me and was nice to hold.

However, if I were given an opportunity to influence the design at all, it would be basically be the current iPad Pro design in a phone format, at the X size.

Yes the 4 was amazing but come on? who wants that small screen?

I went with X. Just wish it was lighter and thinner.
