Hi!

I'm architect. CAD hasn't been updated to M1 but I'm keeping a MBP 9,2 that well... it's not helping. The fan always turns on. Even when I only used this machine brand new since 2018, the mid2012 year caped this machine very hard. Another machine that I have is an old mini 5,1 (i5 2.5 16gb ssd+hd) which it's difficult to sell in my country.

I'm thinking about change the laptop to a new one, but since M1 doesn't work well (as far I know). I'm thinking about intel machines. Here in my country there's a store that can accept your older machine as payment part by agreement of both parts, and they have plenty of machine. Used, and a few new, open box.

If you could get a good money for both machine, and you have this options, what would you do?
* 2019 16" 2.3 8c i9 / 16gb / 5500m 4gb / 1tb / 2 cicles - 2500$ (I checked this serial the warranty start 1 month ago. I could buy AppleCare)
* 2019 16" 2.6 6c i7 / 16gb / 5300m 4gb / 512gb / 16 cicles - 2300$ (this machine I could get it brand new in an official reseller for 2.540$)
* 2018 15" 2.6 i7 / 32gb / gpu 4gb / 512gb / 160 cicles - 1950$

Over that they offer 3month warranty, and later you can used the same machine as payment of a new one, the only bonus here it's get rid of the older machine. But really I don't know what to do, since are quiet expensive.

I found another 2019 16" 2.6 6c i7 / 16gb / 5300m 4gb / 512gb / 33 cicles in 1.800$ but it's like in a eBay website so I have to pay all the money, keep the older machines (which I hope get more or less 700$) and no warranty at all.

Any suggestion?

edit: well, I can buy a 13" but I notice that if you start to configure, you can arrive to the price of 16" which have 16gb ram and 512gb and better graphic. For that I'm considering.
Autocad it a single threat app, and sketch too. Just to keep in mind.

Thank you very much.

Well the question is how long do you expect it will be (if at all) till the software you need is updated to run natively on the M1? If it'll be soon then getting an Intel Mac is short-sighted unless you absolutely cannot make do with what you've currently got any longer. If it'll be a long time or you absolutely cannot wait then getting the latest Intel Mac you can makes a lot of sense. The latest Intel Macs will still get security updates at least for some years yet.

Hi
I thought AutoCAD was running on the M?

However, I have an 16"MBP with the highest specs, and Autocad is great on it [plus can go into bootcamp and use Revit etc].

Go with the I7 over the I9 to reduce heat. Also get the best GPU [5600m] if you can.
thanks

I just checked - it does run under rosetta.

Get the 13" Pro M1 with 16gb ram or mac mini if you are fine with a desktop, is what I would suggest. The Intel machines are hot hot hot and cant wait to see the back of mine.

If you do a lot of work on the laptop only though I would get the 16"intel as the screen real estate is that much better than 13.

I have a fully loaded MacBook Pro 16” of 2019 vintage. It is an amazing computer, but really runs hot while editing pictures in Lightroom. I will be looking forward to a M2 based Pro. I think the 16” model is the best. Although I use this with an external monitor (the LG Apple 5K) when editing photos. I do wildlife photography and a high resolution external monitor is needed. No laptop I have yet seen challenges an external monitor. Otherwise, the 16” MacBook Pro does well. It just does not do well with photo editing. I want the finest of feather detail in bird, fur in mammals, and scales in reptiles. The MacBook Pro screen has not the resolution to make a discard or keep choice.

If the needs are simple, I would go with the 16” version. I hated the smaller sizes. I had been there before, and always went back to a larger screen, despite the increase in weight. I suspect this fall will have revamped line up and will be amazing.

Well, Autodesk took years to bring cad to Mac... and Revió it's not yet in the platform. So maybe won't be soon. I know there's a 2022 version and its not optimized.

The only good thing here its giving my actual machines as payment. I went very amazed how fast Apple its getting out the Intels... you can see how they dropped a lot of machines with Monterey.

Yeah that's other thing, the ability to run Windows to get Revit which I want to learn. Sometimes it's necessary go to Windows for some rendering, but I have quiet a lot without done that.

Thanks for the advice about the i7 over the i9. Cad being an single threat app, the 2018 and 2019 are almost the same, just the difference in 32gb (2018) and 16gb (2019). I always use a keyboard extended... so would worth going to the 2018 for those 32gb?

As I said before, the good thing here its gave my machines as payment.

Yeah its run under Rosetta but as far I could search, has some bugs, its difficult to get stable.

I have a license for an older version and sure it's not working on M1... so I will need to resolver that other thing that's not in my wallet, if you know what I mean.

Thank you!

Intel was hot all this time. My 9,2 runs hot under cad and the project which I'm right now, there are moments when fan goes over 3.500rpm and it's not doing something great. Even when my file are under 3mb.

I could buy the M1 but it's only the thing of the software which it's making me think... and yeah, the opportunity to give my actuals machines as payment.

Ok - get the i7 16” with 5600m GPU, 32gb ram (if running revit in bootcamp).

I think you will be happy with this set up (I have this but the i9).

autocad runs very smoothly on macOS and revit runs well in bootcamp. Best of both worlds with a great screen.

Thank you everyone for yours kind responses and suggestions.

Were very helpful to think about the final decision.

Many thanks. Very kind!
