I'm in the same boat. Wasn't blown away by AW1, thought for sure the AW2 would be an improved design, better battery life, more features, so I was waiting for AW2 to be released. I'm not impressed at all with AW2 either, same size, same battery life. The improvements are nice, but to me AW2 just means AW3 will really be the first actual 'new' AW2, which I definitely plan on buying. Since I know I'm gonna upgrade next year, now I'm consider getting a used AW1 off craigslist for $200 (or less). It will give me a year to try it out and see if it's really worth the money for me, and in the mean time I will likely be able to recoup 75% or more of my cost when I resell, as opposed to a new Series 1 or Series 2. I'm really banking on all the reports that watchOS 3 makes AW1 much more useable.

Any one see a mistake in my thinking here?

I have heard of problems with craigslist apple watches not being properly unpaired which makes them expensive paperweights. Just be sure you can pair it to your iphone. I think the better route is to get a new one from Best buy on a closeout sale so then you get return rights and a full years warranty.

Thanks for the feedback folks, got a brand new original apple watch 42mm for $220 from local Best Buy this morning. Full-warranty, unused, dirt cheap. Perfect solution, and I feel really solid about my decision, especially after finding out the Series 2 is even thicker (smh). Now I've got a year to see if I can find ways to use it that justify the higher cost of next years AW.

Why didn't you get the series 1 with upgraded processor. I think that's worth the price.

$80 for a marginal speed increase (2nd core at same speed won't be all that noticeable for what I imagine most of my tasks to be, i.e. notifications, controlling podcasts/music) just doesn't seem worth it.

At the very least I get to see how much watchOS 3 solves speed issues. If it turns out I use the crap out of it and would truly appreciate more speed, then I can resell it for $200, think of the $20 I lost as research fee, and get the AW2 which I think will be significantly faster, in addition to the brighter screen (don't care about gps or waterproofing).

Point taken. Not a bad idea. Good luck!

Good choice. I have been waiting to see the new model for over 6 months and have been caught up in the excitement. Next year's model is supposed to be a redesign and might be the one you want. The thicker case and emphasis on sports for this new model don't do much for me. The GPS is useless unless you can use it to map your location. the smart move might be as you did and get the best gen1 you can afford. For the cost of the series two aluminum 42 mm I could get close to the old SS model with sapphire crystal. that's tempting..

I'm hoping my wife can give me the inside info on stock st her store (Best Buy). Been there done that with the lineups on launch day. New England (at least NH stores) were a complete **** show. Few arrests even. I'm good without.

My concern was we are moving and didn't want to deal with waiting for a package. I just set ups store locally to receive and hold packages though :)

What is the probability of AW3 coming out next year?
IMO we'll be seeing series 3 only in Spring 18'
I want to say low but who really knows? Series two was a weird launch timing IMO. I have my own speculative reasons why they launched t alongside an iPhone but that's neither here nor there.

It will all depend of how successful AW2 will be. It took a while to follow up series 1 because of slow sales (even though they claim #1 smart watch) I have yet to see sales statistics on the Apple Watch. Spring of 2018 is a possibility, I don't see them doing doing a follow up on series 2 any time soon. I predict they'll be busy redesigning and preparing for next years iPhone's 10th year anniversary. I did pre-ordered an AW2 and test drive it but if it feels it's not worth my money and time it will go back and wait for whenever the next one will be.

Good points. I decided to cancel my series 2 aluminum 42mm pre order. Instead I went for a 38mm SS with sapphire crystal and basic black band for new $250 and BB rewards. I thought about what I really wanted and it was a dress watch that I could read in the dark and see text messages on, plus get info on who was calling me without taking out the phone and also could be used with Apple pay so I would not have to dig out the phone. I'm going to buy a nice black leather band for it and it should look pretty spiffy. I'm expecting OS3 to deal with the speed issues many had so it should be fast enough for my needs.

There will likely be at least 1 rumor about the AW3 sometime in Nov-March, so I would assume we'd have a soft date by then. We already have received glimpses of the AW3 from AW2 rumors; regarding how they would not redesign or change the appearance until the next version (AW3) and potentially adding a camera (whether that will be for AW3 or AW4 is unknown), etc.

I think that apple was not on a very strict schedule when it came to AW2 because it took so long to roll out AW1, and the sales were a huge question mark. Now that it's a more solid product I would assume it will command an annual product cycle - although I don't think people will need to upgrade yearly. It'll be kind of like the iPhone in that respect.
[doublepost=1473536573][/doublepost]What I find curious is what they will end up doing with Series 1 and Series 2. I don't know if this is a one off thing because the AW1 had such a piss poor CPU that they wanted to offer a better "entry level" experience for new watch buyers; or if they are alluding to 2 distinct tiers in the future. One of which would be entry level, and maybe have GPS trickle down into, while the other goes with cell capabilities, allowing for it to be more independent.
