If you return the phone to Apple how will ATT know I returned it?

I called apple.com to return my iphone but they said I have to call ATT to cancel the service as they cannot do it. How will ATT know I returned the phone?

Even if I bought the phone from Apple should I return to ATT?

Call and cancel the service and then return the equipment to apple. You have to return it to the company you purchased it from for a refund.

Make sure you keep all the receipts when you return the phone. Are you keeping the phone service or leaving AT&T. If you were upgraded make sure that you follow up to ensure that they restore that as well.

If I never activate it, do I still need to contact ATT to cancel before I return it? Long story, but I ended up with 2 phones and obviously only need one.
