I'm holding down Shift as I'm hitting the Restore button, but I don't seem to get an option to select the firmware file I've downloaded. iTunes just starts downloading iOS 6.

Am I missing something?

UPDATE:
I had to hold down the Option key instead of Shift to get the menu. Is this a Mac versus Windows thing?

Yes :)

Dont rush though guys if you havent got time. Jump on your computer and download tinyumbrella.

This will save your blobs allowing you to do it any time.

If you have A5 device you will need blobs for 4.x and 5.x

Actually, screw it, just downgrade now and save the hassle.

Here's a cautionary tale.

I successfully downgraded to 5.1.1. However, I did not backup the iPhone to my Mac before doing so — foolishly, I was counting on my iCloud backup.

Turns out there is only the most recent backup in iCloud, and it occurred right after I installed iOS 6 this morning. Now my phone is telling me it can't use that to restore all my info.

I don't remember the last time I backed up to a computer. So looks like I'm hosed and will have to use iOS 6 after all.

The big reason I wanted to downgrade was because of the maps. I am about to leave on a trip and wanted to have the public transit directions from Google maps available. I guess I can access that through Safari.

General mood right now:

PSA: saving the blobs on a 4S/IP3 will only allow you to restore to the 5.x version that was already on the device. If you are on iOS6 and Apple closes the signing window for 5.1.1, you're stuck on 6 even with blobs saved.

When iOS 6 is jailbroken, downgrades will be possible to 5.1.1 on the 4S and iPad 3. Just make sure to save your blobs. :)

Yes! Sorry, I forgot to mention that

----------

After following the instructions for my iPhone 4S, I got a message that "the firmware file is not compatible." Does that mean the window is gone? Eeek can't believe I upgraded so quickly, so regretting doing that! I want my iOS 5 back!

Thanks!

Which point did you get that message? Just try again.

I went through all the steps and everything is restored back to 5.1.1. However, when I open up the settings app, there's a blank screen and then it crashes and goes back to the home screen.

Anyone know of a fix? I've tried restoring twice from the IPSW file on felixbruns.de and same thing both times, bad settings app.

UPDATE: after 20 minutes it started working again

Just tried it on my iPad 2 and said my device is not eligible to restore to the requested build. Looks like I missed the chance. Bummer.

Christ, I missed the chance to downgrade.

I tried editing my host file but the IP address everyone is talking about isn't listed at all.

Dangit I'm unable to rollback. getting a error when trying to downgrade. I used the iPhone3,1_5.1.1_9B208_Restore version from the iclarified site.

**** **** ****!

I tried to downgrade...and it was extracting when it finished got an error :( I want my YouTube and google maps backconcmy iPad 2wifi

downgrade to iOS 5? Pshht, the Tap to Tweet button is too important to me.

Nice post though i'll recommend it to everyone who wants to downgrade, how long does the window stay open for?

I still have my 5.1.1 ipsw since I downloaded it the day it came out. My steps are in Two Parts: Upgrading and Downgrading. What I did was I went into the Library folder, then I clicked on iTunes, then I went to iPhone Software Updates. After I got to the location, I was able to then copy the file to another location. After the first part I then upgraded my phone to 6.0. When I ended up downgrading, I hit the option key while clicking on restore. I then went to the location where I copied the file too, clicked on it, and let iTunes do the rest.

WARNING: If you back up your phone after upgrading to iOS 6, and then wanted to downgrade back and then restore from that last backup from the iOS 6 backup, it won't let you due since it won't let you restore from the last backup. If you restore from an earlier backup from 5.1.1, then you can use that backup to restore from.

how do you do this on a mac

i have downloaded the 5.1.1 file but it does not work the same way on a mac. HELP

iOS 6 is a joke. I say we boycott the App Store until Apple gives iPhone 3GS, 4 and 4S owners the ability to downgrade back to iOS 5. Maps is unusable and won't be decent for at least another two years.
