Most who purchase this will likely wish they would have spent the extra couple dollars and had Apple do it for them. There's lots of opportunity for error and frustration with this repair.

I recently helped a relative that I had given a "hand me down" rMBP take it in to Apple for a battery replacement. Turns out that the battery and case top assembly is a constrained part so they just replace the computer with a refurbished unit from last generation (2016 not touch bar). So $119 for a battery from ifixit that you have to hope you can install properly or $199 to Apple for a laptop upgrade.

Edit to add: came with a new one year warranty too.

Personally, I would buy a Pentalobe screwdriver from a well established tool manufacturer like Wiha over ifixit.

Wiha screwdrivers are great, I have several, and I've got their pentalobe set.

But my onsite toolkit that I carry every day is from iFixit, and while not Wiha quality, it's quite good. It looks like the version I have has been replaced, but it's similar to their current 64 bit driver kit. I'd recommend their tools.

Think I'd just pay Apple to do it for about the same price. They never charge the full $199 in my experience.

actually they do, if that's the required charge. it all depends on whether the battery is attached to the top case. cause Apple doesn't go through all the nonsense about breaking the adhesives in such cases. if the battery isn't attached to the top case then its more like $129-149

but if folks want to do it they will do it. hopefully they will be careful when they remove it so they don't break the battery and have it catch fire. which is why Apple stores have fire safes, safety sand etc

My sister called yesterday that my niece's iPad's screen is like 25% white. The rest of the screen is fine, but part only shows white. Apple's support page says they charge $300 to replace an iPad mini 4 screen

no they don't. they charge $300 to give you a whole new iPad. apple has never replaced parts on iPads or iPods, just iPhones

And when all of these clowns end up rupturing the battery doing a repair that apple has about 400 warnings about never attempting, Apple will certainly be named in the multimillion dollar class action, right?

or not since Apple has been pretty clear they don't endorse this kind of stuff

The fact is that apple no longer has parts for Mid 2012 MacBook Pro 15" with retina display, so if your battery is still around 80% health and condition "normal" Apple will not replace it -- they no longer have the top cases.

This repair is a lot tougher than it may appear at first glance. When doing a battery replacement through an Apple Authorized Service Provider a whole new top case is provided with the battery already adhered.

Also I hope iFixit has you completely discharge the battery. The last thing you would want is to puncture a cell and have poisonous gas explode in your face.
