"This dramatic shift opens up a lot of design possibilities, but the large notch is responsible for the decrease in capacity relative to the X," its teardown email says.

I think they are mistaken. View the x-ray, and imagine that notch horizontally spread out, and compare that to the gap that existed between the batteries before. The space of the notch is actually smaller than the gap that existed prior.

The decreased capacity isn't due to the notch, it's due to the overall battery size. The battery is narrower on the vertical and horizontal. There also appears to be a taper on the right edge, but even if not, the battery is still physically smaller than before.

Something I noticed too, the X had two physically separated batteries yet managed to sum more capacity. If someone wants to have fun with some attempt at scaling the images and doing some math I'm curious to find the surface area differences between the two batteries in the X and the single L shaped battery of the XS
