My iPhone's proximity sensor is no longer working after I opened it up to clean out the dust underneath the glass. This is a huge annoyance for me and am considering just giving up and buying the 3GS Display Assembly from ifixit. Has anyone had any experience with this? Did the proximity sensor and ambient light sensor work after replacing your front with ifixit's?

Do you know which cable on the inside if the unit is for the proximity sensor? And did you reinstall it correctly? There is actually a tiny lever you have to flip up, install the cable, and flip the lever back down. Did you do this?
