Sure, come on over where it's 30 degrees below zero with the wind and 10 below without. WHAT A GREAT IDEA FOR A WEEKEND VACATION!!! :(

Aw, c'mon...a good solid winter is one of the things I really miss about (my) America :) --I'm from northern MN, so college in Chicago was a warm spell.

I hated going to Ikea. I wont go there again. It's just too complicated and too tiresome.

Just follow the arrows!!! LOL...no you are 100% right; you have to go into Ikea with a certain amount of aggressivity and momentum or it can eat you alive...and then just try and find the exit...

Look on Craig's list for IKEA stuff. Tons of it, and it may be local for you.

I'll vouch for craigslist: I've used it extensively in Chicago, Portland, Pittsburgh, Minneapolis and even once here in Lyon, with no problems. Also, there is a cool story behind the guy who started it:

Heck, try this: Go in and pick something out from one of the areas closer to the end of the "IKEA Walk". To save time, enter from the cashier side and go through backwards.

Not only is it completely disorienting, but you feel exactly like a salmon fighting its way upstream.

I too feel your pain......

.........I have been a big fan of IKEA for at least 10 years (before "Fight Club" came out, that stab at "us" is priceless) but never lived near one. I too spent way too much once to have a $80 coffee table shipped here. It was worth it as I've not seen one like it anywhere else.

One time I was visiting my parents in the Chicago area, drove up to the Schaumburg store and got a couple of those "Poang" chairs and shipped them back regular mail. Quite reasonable.

It's just a foundation now, but finally an IKEA is rising just 10 mins from my house!

Thanks, I'll take a look. That's not the model I'm looking for though. That's the Mikael Computer Workstation, although people always list it just as "desk". I can't use that, I've got multiple monitors. This is what I'm going for (in black).
You could go to Home Depot or Lowes, buy two 36 x 72 solid doors, black paint, a rip saw, a drill with a half inch bit, Half inch wooden dowel for biscuiting, and two re-enforced L brackets. Build it yourself for nearly that price and make it a lot stronger. Or you could buy two shelves for 25 a peice and a solid door..lay that sucker on top and you're good to go. It would look exactly the same + you'd have storage.

Is it near the Mall at Millenia? I haven't been over there for a while. I didn't see anything over by Floriduh Mall Tuesday.

You are missing a great resource! Purdue University has an award winning Furniture design program (I think it may fall under there industrial design program)... Students there would love a $200 comission. plus you'd be getting something custom, and of course that warm fuzzy feeling of helping someone out!

An hour from me - but i'm soooooo excited!!

Yup - somewhere by Mall at Millenia. I haven't been down there in awhile. Time to get out and watch it under construction.

I've considered going to Atlanta though, and isn't Miami open??

Very good points. 2 File cabinets and a solid door would have the same effect. And would probably be cooler.

We took the two hour trek to Ikea today for a couple of those Mikael desks + the add-on units.. they look great and were well worth the trip..!

OP: Ya should definitely go!

I'm looking at doing something like this with a 6-foot section of laminate countertop or the like. I'm still sketching out some alternate ideas, but I like the idea of putting together something myself. Sadly, painting is not really an option as I live in an apartment right now and don't really have much of a workspace. But if I get the right countertops and hardware, I could probably put something pretty decent together.

IKEA delivery & Assembly by New York Cargo Taxi

You may save time and money by using New York Cargo Taxi - www.cargotaxiny.com

It is really good to have such a nice local furniture store as IKEA. For almost 2 years now store been very busy and
everyone can find something for the home. Unbeatable rates and SALE events makes this store very popular.
If you do not drive there shuttle bus and water taxi always ready fro your service. But is is still some
negative moment we can talk about:
1. If you buying furniture make sure that you have strong arms and back, because you will lift 30-100 lb boxes and
load them on cart (place them with bar code on top, otherwise you will need unload it at the cashier so they can scan them)

2. For such items as sofas, wardrobes, kitchen cabinets you have to wait (sometimes over 40 minutes) at pick up location

2. Line for delivery service

3. Once you left you items for delivery service you have to go home and wait for couple hours for delivery or 24 hours if you
bought them after 3pm

4. You need immideately check (unpack) all furniture and check for cracks, damages and missing parts.

5. If you ordered assembly you will have arrange it for different time (or day)

6. There is 30 - 45 minutes waiting time to return unwanted or damaged items

7. Not accurate onine stock availability information

You can avoid all this by utilizing New York Cargo Taxi service.
How?
Go to the store and make shopping list or do it at home with www.ikea.com
Send us you "shopping list" to CargoTaxi@gmail.com

Order today and you done tomorrow !!! Save you back, time and money!

I may just have to. Of course I'll save it until I'm ready to grab a few more items, to be sure. My next issue, after driving all the way up there, will be whether or not the box will fit it my car. Going to need to do some measuring, I think.

Damn that's really disappointing. I don't get it. I know it is somewhat heavy, but NOTHING costs that much to ship. That's just ridiculous.

Just make sure you open the box there and check for defects before you head out. You don't know how many times my Ikea furniture has came home with a scratch, dent or missing piece. actually it's probably 50% that I have to go back for a replacement/extra part that they forgot to include.
