From what I've read so far anyway, it takes either having the Ikea gateway or knowing a friend that does so you can connect the bulbs to it for the update. At some point they'll obviously start selling bulbs that are already at version 1.2.217 or later as well.
That's the problem I think I have with my Lightify bulbs. I don't have the Lightify hub and connect direct to SmartThings so don't think I get they bulb firmware updates, maybe why I have some problems with them?

IKEA's Trådfri smart lighting system is now officially compatible with HomeKit, Apple's smart home management platform.

The support was confirmed in IKEA's response to a question posted on its Facebook page this morning, after a customer noticed a change in the technical specifications on the company's Trådfri product page.

According to a thread in the Philips Hue developer support forum, IKEA's smart lighting bulbs are now also compatible with the Philips Hue Bridge, once the products' software has been manually updated.

Existing Trådfri gateway owners need to ensure they have the latest firmware upgrade for their devices to pair them with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, or Google Home.

IKEA had promised HomeKit support for its affordable range of home lighting products back in May. The system was originally announced in late March, and includes LED bulbs, illuminated panels, a motion sensor kit, a gateway kit, and dimming lights.

Update: Sadly, it looks as if IKEA's confirmation of Trådfri HomeKit support earlier today was in error. IKEA has since made the following statement on its Swedish Facebook page:
Note: This does not apply to the Philips Hue Bridge compatibility, as reported from the separate source above.

Spoke to the Swedish ikea support yesterday, the lady told me it should work by now, anybody who can confirm this?

The Hue white ambiance bulbs is about $12 more than IKEA's, $26 vs $18. So, yes 50%. But the Hue white ambiance bulb also has a wider color range. You get what you pay for. Additionally, Hue has a lot more different types of bulbs available, including the cool color ones, so it's a more complete system. For my money, it's not worth saving a few bucks to buy into a more limited system with less functionality. Wait until Black Friday and they blow out Hue. Bought a few color sets last year for $100. They are cheap on eBay too.

I just don't see where the IKEA bulbs are on par with the other makers in this space and the price does not reflect that as it does with IKEA's furniture. Typically IKEA furniture is very reasonably priced but you up front it's junk and disposable. Here, their lighting system really isn't discounted much and it's still junk by comparison.

im looking at doing my whole apartment, and some places im only interested in motion sensors not colours of light. everything in my flat is gu10 (blame the wife) and philips dont do plain white gu10, only white ambient, or ambient and colour.

so for gu10 fittings, you can get an ikea bulb for 12 euro as opposed to 30 euro for a white ambient philips.

IKEA just released updated gateway firmware and Apple HomeKit now sees IKEA Tradfri gateway as HomeKit bridge. But wants to enter 8 digit accessory code, that is, for now, unknown to me.

As soon as they release the update for the app you’ll get the number you need,
The app should be updated today ( 2017-11-01)

if I buy a Philips hue starter pack, including a Philips bridge, and then separately I buy ikea bulbs and motion sensor, do I have to buy a Philips bridge as well?
