I wouldn't mind a few smart plugs, but i have no idea what i would actually plug into them
I’ve got several, garden lights, kettle, decorative lights in the lounge and the television all can be set via timer , so nice for Alexa to switch the kettle on in the morning

Great, just bad that Ikea's electrical stuff sucks and breaks pretty soon.
Mine all works fine !
[doublepost=1555019252][/doublepost]Hopefully they’ll update the uk soon with the firmware

Does this outlet also have a physical ON/OFF button?

If so, I would have a good use for this in the kitchen (not everyone uses iOS).
Is there a voltage limit? I'd like to use with an engine block heater as well.

From what I've read there is no on/off button on the device. As for voltage - they are 120V only.

Not yet available in Belgium, but looking forward to stop using the ikea app and relying on the home app opened from control centre for the smart plug as well.

Just curious for Belgium, do you use 110v or 220v there?

Nice! Great to have another option.

I currently only have one HomeKit plug - the Elgato/Eve model.

Do you know any HomeKit plug/outlet that is capable of 220v?

Appliances or things that you need to automate or too lazy to get up to reset/turn off.

I'm planning to find a smart plug/outlet for my router/modem since I'm too lazy to go to it just to reboot/restart the devices.

Good to know.

I bought several of these to replace cheapo Bye Bye Standby plugs. With the Tradfri connected to my Neeo Brain I can control the lights/plugs with the universal remote. Much handier than having two remotes, and more convenient than picking up your phone, finding and launching an app, finding the right option etc..

That was limited to being on the home Wifi though. If this works remotely, even better (don't know much about Homekit, to be honest).

Does it really need a bridge or were you able to just use it standalone?

Those are sure chunky looking. Why?

Also...I didn’t see anything about dimming, so I guess it’s just a basic switch.

All Ikea lamps use their own version of "chunky" plug because that chunkiness allows them to make it universal so that it can be used anywhere in the world. That's how they keep the cost down by not having to make different plugs for different markets. The "chunky" plug avoids having to make 5 different plugs like Apple does with their WorldTravel adaptor kit ( https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MD837AM/A/apple-world-travel-adapter-kit ).

Without knowing 100% it looks like they have done the same thing here making a universal "chunky" plug that can be used anywhere.

This is a welcomed update. I use the smart on off switches for my audio video fans inside of my cabinets. I have these fans in my main entertainment center and my bedroom cabinet entertainment center. Now I can set up my morning scene that turns off the bedroom fan automatically when I turn on the kitchen lights and have the bedroom fan on a timer with HomeKit now.
I never used on off switches for lamps as I need a dimmer and I have all hue bulbs now so there's no need. But for one off switches for devices these are great.

The Gateway is how firmware updates get pushed down to the accessory devices such as these. I remember last year, when Ikea added HomeKit support to the smart bulbs, you needed the gateway to update the bulbs .
No.

The brains are all in the gateway, the bulbs and other accessories itself do not know anything about HomeKit, Alexa or Google Home.

The gateway talks to the accessories with Zigbee protocol if I recall correctly.

Seems like there is no firmware update available in the UK yet. The app says all my devices are up to date, but when I click the 'update Info' link it says that there are newer firmware versions. I assume they will become available soon.
looking forward to this as it will save me having to run "Homebridge" on my Mac to give HomeKit functionality on Non-Homekit devices

With all due respect, you are partially misinformed. I had bulbs before I bought a pack with a gateway, and those bulbs were easily added to my Home App though HomeKit on their own. Yes, the gateway is the brains of a smart lighting system, but only in so far and connecting them seamlessly together. It allows multiple lights to be configured as one (I have a three-bulb floor lamp with three Hue bulbs and I can control in unison or individually) and for things like firmware updates.

Doesn't surprise me — it happened the same way last time when they introduced HomeKit functionality to the bulbs. They announced it but it took a bit for users to see the actual update.

I may switch to these, pun intended.

I must have too many iHome plugs, at two other locations where each place only has two, we have no problems. But at our home where we have 10, we frequently loose them and have to unplug them and plug them back in.

My understanding is you can force them onto a Phillips Hue hub which we already have.

You added IKEA bulbs to HomeKit without any gateway?

That’s interesting because if I have understood correctly, the IKEA bulbs communicate with Zigbee, not Wi-Fi. So iPhone or iPad can’t even see them. You need the gateway to control them with IKEAs app, for the same reason.

IKEA bulbs are compatible with Philips Hue gateway.

Of course some bulbs may work without a gateway with HomeKit, if they have Wi-Fi. I have a smart plug which works without a gateway.

https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/customer...t/faq-smart-lighting/compatibility-protocols/

“We have now released software updates for the TRÅDFRI gateway and the TRÅDFRI app that let you voice control your IKEA smart lighting products through Amazon Alexa (if available in your market), as well as set up and adjust the lights using Apple’s Home app”

Yes.

Initially — when Ikea first announced the bulbs would gain Homekit support — the bulbs in market didn't have the firmware applied to them so they needed their gateway to apply it. After new stock went out, it had the new firmware applied.

According to some, IKEA bulbs are compatible with Philips Hue gateway.

Ikea bulbs are compatible with the Phillips Hue Gateway as that is the only Gateway I have, which is the reason I asked my initial question ("Does anyone know if this will work with a Phillips Hue Gateway? I know the bulbs from Ikea do."). I asked that to know if the Philips gateway would update the current switches in stock or if it was better just to wait till the new stock with the updated firmware was already applied. All the bulbs have WiFi, as that is how they connect to the system and accessories without physically touching.

After looking up the product info I found the answer — "You need one of the steering devices in the TRÅDFRI series (remote control, wireless dimmer or wireless motion sensor) in order to connect your control outlet with the gateway and the app." The smart plug needs both the gateway and a steering device so I'll just wait for it to come updated — probably in the fall.

Perhaps initially to setup, but I’ve been using Ikea bulbs and the smart plug without a steering device and have just used Siri/Alexa to control them without issue. Even the Ikea app lets you manage them.

Basically pair them to a steering device and then move them into their own group. Job done.

Is the update US only?

I have some EU plugs, and according to the apple store, the Tradfri App has no new update.

I’m sorry to police this thread but this is just plain misinforming people. You cannot have TRÅDFRI Bulbs or Outlets in Homekit without a Gateway - so if you control your devices in Homekit, you have a gateway - you probably just forgot or misunderstand the specifics of the question. The TRÅDFRI devices - just like HUE devices - are Zigbee controlled units (NO WIFI), and thus cannot be controlled by homekit or a smartphone app without a gateway/bridge.

For a device to be Homekit compatible directly it would need WiFi or Ethernet Built-in so it can talk to the Homekit HUB (Usually your iPad or a Apple TV).
