I'm buying iLife 05 ASAP also. If it included iTunes 5, I'd be all over it. But since iTunes will be a free upgrade (and we KNOW we'll get it eventually) I'm not too upset :) The rest of the suite looks pretty nice... and I expect there will be updates to all these apps after Tigers release (assuming it will be available right away and not after Tiger is available) to enable speed improvements and other things based on 10.4's new underpinnings.

I'm eagerly waiting for iDVD to support widescreen. I cant imagine what improvements they can make to iTunes apart from making it bloatware. iPhoto looks good as is, but needs the ability to export web-based galleries that dont rely on having a .mac account. Currently I use Adobe Photoshop for that.

iPhoto also needs to be able to rename the file when I rename the title. I hate naming all my photos in iPhoto and then go to upload them, e-mail them, etc. and find they still have their original useless filename. It would be nice not to have to export photos from iPhoto using the title, etc. and have the filenames change when I change the titles...

I really have my doubts about iMovie HD .. FC Express HD I see happen .. but I don't see mom and pops get a +$2K camcorder and edit the footage on their iBook G4 ..

A tad far fetched not ..

iMovie has been around a long time, since OS 9 days. Back then many consumer camcorders cost ~$2K, and people were spending that much to load footage onto their fruit-colored iBooks and iMacs (both G3s).

The idea of HDV support in iMovie is not very far fetched at all. Rather, it would be consistent with what happened in the past with DV support.

It shouldn't be too long before lower-priced HDV camcorders (or something better than HDV but with HD resolution) hit the market.

The HDV workflow in iMovie will likely be either very slow (if the Lumiere HD method is any indication) but automated, or fast but very limited (cuts only, like the bundled editing application that ships with the JVC HD1 and HD10).

Not if you are smart. The link is XML. Microsoft's format for its next Office is all XML based.

Apple's will support OASIS's XML standards format would be my guess.

If Apple goes after Office 2004, then the bridge between the Apple platform and PC world will sink and likewise any ambitions of Apple to add switchers. This is a TERRIBLE idea.

I will drop the Mac like its hot if Apple weakens this cross-platform compatibility. Anyone who thinks otherwise is ignoring the need for Apple to woo PC users of Office. Apple could PAY me to try a new spreadsheet and word app and I wouldn't use it. Corel tried to do the same thing with its suite of apps targeting PC users and it flopped. Apple should concede the fact that Office is TOO entrenched. If MS sees Apple undermining its Office suite, MS won't continue to develop it --and this is critical to lure PC'ers to Apple's superior hardware.

Many of you are forgeting the fact that MS Office Costs $300. I am a student and all I really need to do is make simple documents and spreadsheets. You could argue that there are other options but the average user wants to buy a computer that comes with a work suite preloaded. I think they are already making a mistake by not having one preloaded on the pro line of Macs, escencially expecting people to buy MS Office. It would be a bigger mistake to completely get rid of Appleworks. If they made a new work suite, it would not try to be a Office killer, it would simply be a cheaper option for people who don't need all of the features of Office.

Maybe you are forgetting that the Student version of Office only costs $129. I don't think Apple is going to make many inroads in this market unless something happens on the Windows side first (OpenOffice takes off, etc.).

I am pretty sure there is still a very good market for a cheap work suite, maybe $50 or less. $129 is still a lot of money to pay for a word processor and spreadsheet program (These are the only 2 programs I would use and I would only use the basic features of them, and I know that a lot of people are the same way). Just because there are so many features it doesn't mean everyone wants them. This is why Apple makes pro apps like Final Cut Pro and then they make cheaper versions (iMovie) for people who don't need all the features. For me the current Appleworks is fine but I would be happy if they updated it.

I would think that Keynote 2 or a stripped down version would be included in iWorks.

i think that having a stripped down version of keynote would be odd because it would basically be an older version of it. no?

iMovie -> Final Cut Pro
iDvd -> DVD Studio Pro
GarageBand -> Logic Pro
iPhoto -> (Sugar = Photo Studio Pro?)

Best idea I have seen on here all day. I hope this is true. A pro photo app to help us organize our HUGE raw image files and provide a few more advanced features.

Really helpful in academic presentation

I really like the transitions, but what would make the deal is a way for the date on the title page to change to the current date... automatically. Since I repeat the same lecture over an over. It is a pain in the arse to have to do it every-time. Let's just hope.
Oh, the transitions are cool though. I guess we'll see next week. :D

Agreed. What iPhoto really needs is support for cataloging video clips, kind of the way that Google's Picasa does.

Can't do much with video clips in iPhoto. Perhaps it would be better if there was a companion software for iMovie that allows for cataloging, and perhaps some sort of archiving mechanism.

Around the end of March would be my guess :rolleyes:

That would be a surprise when most have predicted just around or prior to WWDC. A very good reason for a March release IMHO, would be that it would coincide with an upgraded Power Mac and PowerBook. It could be that these new versions would require Tiger.

How will iLife '05 fit in with Tiger? We already now the iLife suite is getting another revamp with Tiger, so will iLife 'Tiger' be completely independent from iLife '05 or will it be iLife '05 reloaded (to borrow the term from MS!) with some features only for Tiger users?

Exactly my question!

Anybody have a clue if iLife '05 will have Tiger dependent features? Such as iPhoto with Core Image capabilities, iMovie that leverages Core Video, etc. . .

Hopefully iPhoto will get Spotlight integration so that;
1) You can search your photo library instantly a-la iTunes.
2) Titled photos appear in system-wide spotlight searches (currently searching for "Bob" will reveal pictures sent from Bob, but not iPhoto albumm pictures that are titled "Bob falling over" etc)

Maybe it will get CoreImage integration, as there was a lot of emphasis on the non-destructiveness of it. So, Apple could advertise that your photos would remain "in-tact" after you'd applied all these different effects etc, perhaps going so far as to script it or have "smart effects", where pressing a button will apply an effect to all enclosed items (eg sepia).

The only iApps I use these days are iTunes and iPhoto (use iTunes a lot more). My video and DVD stuff is done with the pro apps.

That being said, I will always buy the latest and greatest iApp package, even if I end up using just a part of it. Why? I don't know really. I just FEEL like I have to, as there might be a feature or two in the other apps that I will want to use one day.

Besides, its very inexpensive, and lets me have a shiny new box and go through that great fuzzy warm feeling of installing something new and sweet. Can't go wrong. ;)

We are alike, you and I :)

I'm almost sure, iTunes 4.7.1 will be released on Jan 11. Why? Because the single purpose of iTunes 4.7.1 is to offer support for the new iPods (mini and probably flash)

Typically Steve says "[product name] is available for download right now/straight after this keynote", and everyone hits Apples servers.

Airport Express Revision?

Is there any speculation as to a revised Airport Express with perhaps an incorporated remote controle for AirTunes?

I'm holding off buying an Airport Express until it is apparent there will be nothing new for a while or an annoucement is made about a revised AE.

YES

Even apple seems to have been hung up in iPod too much instead of computers :(
