There are several third party wireless keyboards available that are backlighted. It means spending a few extra $$ though. I usually keep a small desk lamp nearby my iMac which helps plus the fact that I'm a fairly good touch typist.

I don't care as much about TouchID in the keyboard as I do about a backlight. I would pay a pretty penny for a backlit Magic Keyboard (why is it "magic?" Because it can be charged by Lightening? Whatever).
This is actually a decent keyboard: https://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/mx-keys-wireless-keyboard
Feels a bit different than the Apple Magic Keyboard, but is a similar low profile, low travel keyboard.
Illuminates when you touch it. Adjustable levels.
Charges via USB-C (not Lightning, but still universal enough for Macs).
Supports both bluetooth as well as Logitech's proprietary dongle and can be paired with multiple machines (think Mac, iPad, laptop).

I just ordered that keyboard. Thank you!

I wish they would add a backlight, I do prefer the magic keyboard with number pad for anything Mac and then use the Microsoft surface keyboard for windows. Never been able to find anything I could be totally comfortable with that has a backlight.

Power is clearly the issue but even if they could do it whilst having to be plugged in!

I will report back after using that keyboard @xraydoc (I think) recommended. He gave it a nice review and it does have the number pad, which I’ve grown to love on the Magic Keyboard.

I ordered this keyboard from Amazon today. It was delivered like 20 minutes ago.

This is a nice keyboard--it has some heft to it and the travel is a good deal further than the Magic Keyboard.

Once question---do I have to use that USB dongle? I couldn't connect the keyboard without it and now I lost a USB A port :-(

No doubt that used to be the issue, but with today's technology, it really shouldn't be an issue anymore. I would gladly recharge more often as a trade off though. lol

Power consumption of the backlighting is definitely not an issue. This was proven by the Logitech K811. The K811 design is over 2 years old. The backlighting is marvelous, with user-defined illumination levels and automatic activation as your hands approach the keyboard. And yet, with all these features and my heavy daily usage, it only needs to be recharged once every 7 weeks or so. My Apple trackpad only gets about half that amount of usage before it needs recharging !

The keyboard supports bluetooth. You don't need the dongle if you don't want it.

I just got this keyboard today! Liking it so far. Had to customize it a bit using the Logitech software.
The only thing I miss is the EJECT key. I always used the shortcut to put my Mac to sleep. But can’t seem to find a way to map a shortcut to this Logitech keyboard!
