How would it be advantageous for Apple to send specs and such to third-party case makers? While we really don't (officially) know anything about the upcoming iPhone, it seems that the case makers always have the first clue or idea of what is to come. How is this, and why?

They don't, they just start producing cases based off of the rumors. Before the 4s came out, they all bought it was going to be a bigger iphone. It was released, and it wasn't, and millions of cases went to waste.

They don't know anything officially, they go off of what rumours are posted. And maybe have some of their own sources that leak things to them, but Apple doesn't tell them anything.

Case makers are not more special than others with respect to getting leaks.
There are a lot of case makers, that produce each one or more variants of a presumed leaked design. One of them is probably going to be right.

So what? What's the point of the question again?

As said about, they don't get the specs from Apple... but they aren't just making them up either.

Case manufacturers have a vested interest in getting the specs for cases. The iPhone 6 is being produced in factories in Foxconn/China. Someone likely bribes a worker to get the dimensions.... from there, they can use that to create cases.
