Just configured my new birthday gift - an airport extreme base station; my iBook recognizes it - says I'm connected; when I try to surf with Safari or IE I get an error: cannot find server. I'm in a rowhouse so I tried to access internet via one of my neighbors' wireless networks, and it works fine (typing this question while online, in fact).

Anybody out there know what I can do next?

Thanks in advance -

I assume everything is OK with your cable/dsl modem? You can be connected to the router, and not access the internet if your modem is off or having some sort of issue

have you checked the settings in the network connections preference panel to make sure they're all right? I just had the problem where i could see the wireless signal but had to actually go to preferences pane to get it to work.

I would suggest checking your router. Often times my router, for some reson, will shut off. I am still connected to the network, but as the internet router is not on, I cannot connect to the internet.

Turn off everything - Mac, Airport and modem/router - for a few minutes.

Then turn on the modem, wait 30 seconds and turn on the airport and then turn on the Mac.

It may be that when your modem connects, your ISP does some kind of MAC lookup so if you first connected with your modem connected to the Mac, it's your Mac's MAC address that's associated so when you then hook it up to the Airport, its Mac address isn't accepted. Turning it all off, and turning them back on again in the above order should get round that.
