i presume that the issue is with preview.app? had you tried another program? from my understanding it tries to cache everything into RAM...
 
Did you use pictures that came straight out of the camera? If so, you could try to resize all of them (with a batch processing software or something like that) and then compile them into a PDF. I would assume that this does make a difference when it comes to file size.

if you bothered to read the thread, its a 3,000 page document of some sort. who uses pdf for images :eek:
 
Your page out to page in ratio is still under 15%, so it's not bad. Once it starts exceeding 15% then you'll see performance hits.

D'oh *facepalm* Missed that in the OP.

To some of the later posters, an SSD won't cure the whole problem, it's more a bandaid solution.
The real problem as I see it lies in the size of the PDF documents - first the OP should consider what level of detail is necessary for the work he/she is doing, then resave any existing PDF's as per the URL's I've previously linked.
