I’m gonna drop about $1500 on the new Mini

My MacBook Pro 2013 is still going strong after 5 years of faithful service. It can’t smoothly play the 4K I import from my iPhone 8+, so Apple has finally forced my hand. I figure a 5 year upgrade cycle is pretty darn good, so investing about what I paid awhile back is a good move. I have a 1080p monitor, so I’ll eventually up my game there as well.

A number of people who clamshell their MB’s are moving over. I think it’s a good move. Faster speed on day one, fewer systems to worry about like the battery, and move it to the TV when you replace it with a 2022 mini.

This is hilarious! I am in the same exact position. I have a 2013 MacBook Pro that I paid $1500 (i5, 256GB) and am thinking about the same thing. I am looking at an i7 with 256GB drive and 16GB of RAM for $1409 (EDU).

Probably I7 256 SSD minimum. The RAM replacement scares me a bit, so likely 16Gb ram.

I would personally just pay for the upgraded RAM. I know that it is possible to do it myself, and I am really loathe to pay the Apple Tax these days, but saving $100 (the $180 upcharge minus about $80 for an 8GB RAM module) just doesn't seem worth the trouble of possibly breaking something or voiding the warranty.

That's me (just waiting till the dust settles over the various, upcoming holidays ...), but I'm using a 2015 MBP 15" (2.5/16/512/370), stays mostly clamshelled/docked. I'd just as soon have a high performance Mini, add some fun stuff like an eGPU, etc.

Part of me would easily part with my 15" MBP for a cheaper laptop at this point. If I sold it for $1500 I would use the difference for paying down the Mini. Mini rocks!

I went $2400 but I'm replacing a Mac Pro from 2008..... i7 + 32 Ram and 1TB HD - should be good for a few more years.... will WAY out perform my 2008 machine...

• I pulled the trigger. Thanks for reminding me about the edu discount. That covers the sales tax basically. It's not shipping right away which is good news for aapl I suppose.
