I'm used to my old 12" MBA. Now it's old enough to have all sorts of issues so I'm using my wife's 2 year old 13" MB but I'm not enjoying the experience. The trackpad is quite different, in my experience and when I type an email, any slight movement of my thumb or any finger on, or it seems even near the trackpad causes my cursor to jump somehow to a new position on the page or even send the unfinished email. Web browsing, A new window will suddenly appear with just a slight finger movement.
Is there anyway to adjust the trackpad to be much less sensisitive, and is this even "normal behavoiur" on these MacBooks? I dread using it as it's such an unpleasant experience. She says she doesn't have any similar problem but she's a "proper"typist, so somehow manages to not have any fingers or thumbs touch the trakpad. I on the other hand, am more of a clumsy and slow typist who has to watch the keyboard when typing. I'm a trades person (electrician) so not a total klutz but I do have wrist and hand pains that would make it difficult to type with hands high and at the right angle to prevent this, if that is in fact the problem. I never had any similar issues with my old MBA and I'm very relunctant now to buy a new Mac Laptop if I'm going to have the same issues.
Anyone else have this problem?

Yes, you can adjust the sensitivity of the trackpad by going to the 'setting's app and then into the 'trackpad' app.
You've got a slider for 'click' weight and another for tracking speed.

Palm rejection is also broken on my M1 MBA. If using external bluetooth or wired mouse/trackpad you can disable built-in trackpad by clicking on Apple icon > System Preferences > Accessibility > Pointer Control and putting a checkmark next to "Ignore built-in trackpad when mouse or wireless trackpad is present". Just remember to revert the changes when you're done unless the wife is cool with the change.

I'm very tempted to join in on the beta just to give them feedback on stuff like this and a few other things. I haven't used a MacBook regularly in maybe 10 years and this is hard to get used to. I'm a "proper typer" but my palms near my thumbs kind of rest on the trackpad.

I got this exact problem. Moved from a 15inch 2013 MPB to a 13inch M1 MBA and last year a M1 Max 16. The trackpad is enormous! and I find the exact same issue happening as the OP. It nearly always happens for me during the typing of "the". No other word seems to trigger it. I've been wondering what is causing this to happen as I've never had this issue before and I touch type. I'm guessing it's the way my palm pushes the ridiculously sized track pad when I type the. It's not always but way too often for it not to be annoying.

I will try the settings as I didn't realise there were sensitivity settings.
EDIT: I twas on medium so I've set it to Firm. I wonder if that will hep...
EDIT 2: Nope. Just happened again typing "the". I may have to start using a mouse instead of the trackpad.
