hi! Today i started having this bug with iphoto. if i close the window in the x it quites the iphoto instead of closing the window. then i use cmd + tab and iphoto is not running. i thought it was some random temporary bug and restarted the system but i'm still having the bug. anyone know how to fix this? thank you

Since the iPhoto program isn't capable of having multiple windows open simultaneously, closing the window closes the program.

Photo Booth, Disk Utility, and other programs only capable of having one window act the same way. :)

If you want to get iPhoto off of your screen, but still have it running, try hitting COMMAND-H (for Hide) when you're in it. The window should disappear, but if you CMD+TAB, you should still be able to see it.

Closing iPhoto quits it. The same is true for iMovie and plenty of other apps. Basically if you need the single window that the app uses and it isn't meant to run in the background, it's going to shutdown when you close it.

This is not true for apps like Pages and Numbers because you don't need to have a file open to use it, you can START files with these apps.

With iPhoto, if your window is closed then what are you doing with it? You can't be editing photos if the window is closed, right?

Just some clever work by Apple :p

Well it's not a bug from where I sit it's a misfeature at best. Large programs that take time to start up should not close when the window is closed. E.g., for System preferences it's fine, but for iPhoto it's not.

I use cmd-H to hide iPhoto, but I somewhat resent having to treat it different from all other programs, for which I just close the window if I want to get rid of it.

To be fair: on my new iMac iPhoto does start up pretty damn fast, so it I really *were* to close it it wouldn't be a tragedy. But I still don't think it should work the way it does.

Applications that are window-dependent quit when closed.

Without any windows you can start a new file from the menu bar

Without any windows....well you couldn't do anything anyway

Closing the window removes clutter but allows your music to play in the background

See the trend? If it NEEDS a window to function PERIOD then it will close when you close it. If it can't run in the background and it can't start a new file without a window then it's useless.
