It pains me to see talentless hacks like Andrea Bocelli becoming so famous when there are some really amazing singers out there who don't get the recognition they deserve. Bocelli's voice has a similar timbre and sound to that of Pavarotti, and that may have something to do with his popularity, but his voice is weak and not well trained. I once heard a recording of him performing 'Tosca' with some real opera singers and it was really quite obvious how far from their level his voice really is. I seriously wonder if he would be as famous as he is if he were not blind.
Anyway, this is just my opinion. Obviously there are many people in the world (and on this thread) who enjoy listening to him and I am glad that they get some enjoyment from his music. I just wish some of this fame and fortune could go to some real operatic talents.

But keep in mind that Bocelli is a pop singer who also does opera, and not vice versa. You might call what he does "Popera." :D I agree that his forays into full-scale opera aren't very successful, but most "real" opera stars have plenty of trouble crossing over into the pop world where mainstream fame and fortune can truly be had in this day and age. Pavarotti did manage to become a world superstar, but in addition to the voice he had the right kind of personality for the mainstream media/public, and that's just something you have to be born with.
