Ok..i already got the instructions on how to jailbreak my iphone 3g...but heres the thing. I've already have regular service through regular activation...do i jailbreak my phone WITH my sim card already in with service or is there something i have to do before then? Will i be able to get my regular service back after jailbreaking my iphone? Do i take my sim card out before jailbreaking? I'm a little confused....help is appreciated.

Not entirely accurate. For some users (me included) you need to take out the sim card when building the ipsw through Pwnage, else iTunes will return an unkown error 1600 when you try to restore with the custom ipsw...

so before i jailbreak my phone and install cydia do i take my sim card out before starting the process? I'm only jailbreaking so i can install cydia and download apps...i still want to use my regular ATT service without any hitches...is this possible?

You don't need to remove your sim card. Just make sure that if you see a box that says, "Activate iPhone," you uncheck that box.

Are you on Mac or Windows? Depending on the answer you may want to read a tutorial.

If you're on Mac, read this. Those are the instructions for 3G. If you're on the Edge iPhone, switch to the appropriate tutorial on that site.

Here are the instructions for Windows.

Interesting. I've restored with a custom ipsw (2.1) a few times without removing my SIM or getting that error. Is it only if you build your own custom ipsw and THEN try to restore? Or is it if you use any custom ipsw?

I've jailbroken with both methods, and I've never gotten any kind of an error. I think it's a simple matter of random chance.

This is incorrect. Error 1600 comes from trying to restore with a custom IPSW on a phone that is in regular restore mode rather than DFU (you'll know you're not in DFU mode if you see the "connect to itunes" screen).

Of all the times I've jailbroken my phone, I've never had to touch the SIM card.

Will that windows method work for ipod touch too? I know this is iphone forums but I have both and cant find an easy way for the ipod... will the windows method work for ipod touch if I just use ipod 2.1 instead of iphone 2.1 and then just follow the other steps?

There IS a section for the iPod touch here... You'll find your answers there I'm sure. But for now, as long as you're restoring with the iPod firmware rather than the phone you can use any of the jailbreaking/unlocking programs you'd use for a phone.
