I'm not saying the old design was incredible but come on… a little effort would be nice.

No

You see the old replicates your old home

The new one replicates your new Stratus cube.

Whatever

I honestly think the UI isn't done in a few spots. The clock app being one of them.

The clock app might be the worst thing about the entire OS. So completely unintuitive. It took me a full minute of staring at the alarm screen to figure out what the hell I was supposed to do. The plus sign to add an alarm is practically subliminal.

Who actually uses the clock app? I just tell Siri to set my alarm. One of the few things I actually use Siri for.

The cylinders to set a timer are what impressed me the most about iOS when I saw them for the first time, so I'm bitter. :) "So let's get rid of skeuomorphic design elements" they said. "OK, we'll take away the cylinders but leave the numbers animated to they look like they wrap around a cylinder anyway." "No, we can't do that." (looks at watch and notices it is 9/17) "Sounds good!" <high fives around the table>

I find the clock app to be about the same as far as usability is concerned. I also noticed that if you have multiple cities set in the world clock section it tells you how many hours ahead or behind they are, easy enough to figure out on your own, but a bit more convenient.

I prefer the picture on the right. It's labelled Newsstand I don't need it to look like a bookshelf.

Why stop there then? Why have the book icons? Why not just have a grey box with text in it saying "The New Yorker" or "The New York Times"?

Because that would take away from the content. The app isn't supposed to take precedence over the content. That's why design is so minimalistic in iOS 7. It lets you focus on your content.

Okay so why have the gradients in the background? My point is minimalist design can be done well and be very appealing. This just looks like they ripped out the 'skeuomorphism' and couldn't think of anything to replace it with.

The new Newsstand is translucent, if you don't like how it looks then change your wallpaper. I think it looks great in context and really plays up the layered feel of iOS 7.

The clock app is exactly the same as iOS 6, but with no texture.

Out of all the design issues with iOS 7, you used this for your example? All your comparison here shows is how ugly the old newsstand was.

Please explain how it was ugly. Do you recoil in horror when you see a real bookshelf? I don't understand the hatred of skeuomorphism to be honest. I understand a graphical interface doesn't have to look like the real life counterpart but what precisely makes it so horrible?

The words gaudy, overdone, silly come to mind to be honest. It doesn't look the least bit "premium" or classy, either... it's about on the level with Microsoft Bob. iOS 6 had some great things going for it but this is the bad end of the spectrum.
