How do I go about doing this?

I only want to update to 4.1 because I need to be able to Facetime with Macs (email addresses) AND Pwnage tool preserves your baseband but how do I go about updating. Do I update to official apple firmware 4.1 first then jailbreak?

Use the Pwnage tool method. Quick and painless. It also preserves your baseband.

You'll also need the SHSH blob for 4.1 as well.
If you update first, you'll lose your bb. Like the other poster wrote, you need to use a custom firmware to preserve the bb.
