Honestly, I feel bad for everyone buying the iPhone Xs because next year when Apple releases the iPhone 11 with no notch, it's gonna be epic.

NSFW Warning

Actually, Apple has already responded:

I am over with (read: had my fill of) reading logical fallacies plastered all over the forum and internet. I am over with so many people feeling the need to announce their every Apple decision to total strangers, as if said strangers had any personal or financial interest vested in the "I hate Apple" (for the flavor of the day (or minute) reason). I am over with people attaching self-worth to electronic gadgets, as if the world at large really cares what brand phone one uses to text or post pics with. I am over having to constantly wait for the ladies to get ready for their date, as if impressing the public at large was more important than being on time and making my heart skip a beat at the sound of her voice. I am over with kids and adults who believe the world owes them something for free just because said persons breath the same air I do. I am over the fact that the Apple TV remote doesn't have a back channel button, although I still get irritated at the mention of it sometimes, (like now). I have had my fill of garbage t.v. (read: reality t.v.) What happened to the History Channel and Science Channel actually showing programing that befits their channel name? What the world needs is more James T. Kirk, Captain Picard, Dr. Who, Sheldon Cooper, and Scooby Doo. I am over with kids (and adults) who have such a limited vocabulary, that every other word is four-lettered and hearing the constant barrage of verbal diarrhea makes me question if some of the people are suffering from Tourettes Syndrome, or just stuck on stupid because they want to be. I am over with so many on here believing that it is Apple's job to keep them entertained every minute of the day, not to mention demanding that Apple come up with new features for every smart phone, just so said complainers can feel secure in their personage, and feel strong enough to brag to others, "I have the latest and greatest" from brand X.

One thing I am not over with, is the pleasure and joy that using the Apple ecosystem brings.

I'm so over the iphone. Every year I vent on this site about my frustration with the lack of new features because I'm angry and hopeful that, on the off-chance, something will be done about it.

This year is no different.

How can I say it without sounding like a troll: Tim Cook has NFI. He started from a very high platform. He becomes CEO of the company which invented and makes arguably the greatest consumer product the world has ever seen, all thanks to Steve Jobs (RIP) and has since seen it progressively reduced to an overpriced, feature-starved, glorified emoji device.

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, but:

In 2014, the iphone came with with a big screen (cool) with very little else added to the iphone.

In 2015, Apple introduced 3D touch which had so much potential but was left to became effectively a shortcut menu. 3D touch is now, according to reports, on its way out.

In 2016, Apple introduced a better camera (an improvement, not to be confused with a new feature) but took away the headphone jack.

In 2017, Apple introduced Face ID, a biometrich which replaced another biometrich, again, an improvement rather than a new feature because it was a case of one security access feature replacing another, no new capability was added. It also polarised opinion as not everyone was/is a fan of Face ID. Oh, and we also saw anamojis, yipeeeeee.

And in 2018....a bigger screen and a spec bump.

And next year? Well at this rate Apple will be removing something from the iphone because that's the one certainty you get with Apple, for whatever reason, they remove features. Anyone remember the old Youtube app? Gone. Headphone jack, gone. 3D touch, probably gone. Apple giveth, Apple taketh away.

Back to Apple's go slow approach. When's it gonna end? I've had enough of it. In the last 5 iphone keynotes, we have seen improvements and spec bumps here and there, but nothing to make me go wow. When was the last time Apple added something which made the iphone do something it could never do before and which was innovative?

Now before people say "phones have stopped making people go wow" and "what do you expect from a phone", please spare me the comments. Those comments may have been relevant 2-3 years ago, but not now. In the last 5 years, we have not seen one major added feature to spruce life back into the iphone. And don't get me started on the years preceding 2014 and how slow the feature-adding was then too, albeit, better than the years post 2014.

The iphone has become a boring, bland device. If all we want from it is to read email, play music, text and consume media, which is what some keep saying, then why has it become so damn expensive? I have seen at least 5 phone reviewers say if you're going to spend a thousand dollars on a phone, then the Note 9 is the phone to buy. And that is no coincidence. Not kidding you, the Note line has left the iphone line behind. And I say this as an iphone user. After playing with the Note 9 in the store, it did make me go "WOW".

That is all.

You failed to acknowledge a lot of things. The big feature this year is 6.5" of OLED which will easily be the best quality screen ever made for a smartphone. I can't say it any simpler than that. If that screen doesn't wow you then I'm not sure you're the target. The other iphones announced? They're for the users of older phones. For those people, these phones should be more than sufficient.

If that doesn't grab ya, then go back to the tried and true. The iphone is the only one that can accommodate most users. You won't get imessage or facetime on an android. More software upgrades. Software MADE for this hardware. Google's has to be customized by samsung or whoever and loaded with bloatware. Best support. Best resell. Best apps. Best media store. Best ecosystem..airpods, ipad, mac, homepod, apple tv, etc which makes the experience much better. Sure, there's room for improvement but crying about the XS hardware isn't really high on my list.

OP, I’m not going to berate you over your rant. I’ve been frustrated too. And I’d argue some of what you say is spot on. But let’s also consider; what have other phone makers been doing that’s any different?

I have friends who are loyal to certain flagships. Let’s use the Samsung Galaxy S series and Note series as examples. They’ve been just as underwhelmed. Designs are not changing radically over there either. Spec bumps are incremental. Innovation isn’t happening (don’t confuse innovation with throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks...aka gimmicks). They are bored as well. They have their own sets of issues, gripes, wishlists, etc.

I’m not surprised you are gushing over the Note 9. It’s new to you. A shiny new toy. To the average Note consumer, particularly a Note 8 user, it’s about as compelling an upgrade as the XS to an X user. Once the novelty wears off and it becomes just another phone to you, check back in. Let us know if it’s still as compelling as you find it to be now.

And while you’re dabbling in android (and there is nothing wrong with that at all), see if you can find a watch, or ear pods, or tablet that’s as quality and reliable as the Apple line. I think we are seeing a shift. Apple has other products besides the phone with a lot of room, and potential, to grow.

Not sure batteries would last that long.
Batteries are under 100$. Is replace it after 2-3 years. But these phones are at the level that I don’t see them slowing down like the older phones did. Especially since Apple has changed the power performance of the batteries now after all that bad press it went through.

I think you're getting the worst end of the deal if you switch from Apple to Samsung.

You do you though, to each their own.

Im confused.... which smartphone every single year has a brand new innovative feature again?

Just curious. Seems to me a smart phone here and a smart phone there has an innovation, but then its absorbed by the big companies the next year if its good and ignored if its bad, then that’s it. Im not really sure what compay that’s made 10 years of phones has made a new innovative feature every single phone.

Im genuinely asking.... if there’s a company out there who has done what the OP says is lacking for 10 phones/years in a row, I wanna know about it.

And remember... “android” isn’t an answer, that’s like asking what’s new with Toyota’s and answering “motorcyles.” We are talking specific companies.

I guess. Apple, the first trillion dollar company ain’t hurting that’s for sure.

This is a great point. Part of the reason I got into Apple pre-iPhone was because my first Mac laptop (an iBook) was so stable and lasted a while compared to the competition. I associated their products with stability and longevity. My last MBP lasted 6 years before I upgraded, compared to being frustrated with a Windows machine after 2. Before my iPhone 6s, I found my Android phones almost unusable after 18 months. With the 6s, I made it to 3 years before I decided to get the iPhone 8 Plus. It's an amazing phone. Would I have liked it as much if I had upgraded every year. Probably not. But since they make a good quality device, I don't need to and can wait longer, and then be wowed when I eventually do upgrade.

This is also probably the reason that they spent as much time on the eco-friendliness of the production process and Apple as a whole. They make **** to last a long time and that’s expensive. If you want a new one every time it’s going to cost you.

I think the eventual solution to yearly upgrades is to find a monthly payment you are comfortable with and accept the fact that you are paying monthly for your phone in perpetuity. Yes you will pay more. No there won’t be a knock-your-socks-off feature every year. Then, if you upgrade, you pay tax and continue with the exact same monthly payment. If you don’t, you keep the monthly payment for another year and can try again at the next release. Yes the prices will go up, but only ever by a couple of bucks a month. If at any point it gets too expensive, keep paying the phone until it’s paid off and then it’s yours til a new one comes along that you like.

But at least there are options. Only reason I switched to att 8 years ago was for my first iPhone. Soon as it was available I went back to Verizon.

I’m not exactly over Apple but I will be skipping the iPhone flagships this year and will probably start phasing out more pieces of my Apple ecosystem.

Apple TV was the first to go and was replaced by Amazon Fire TV. I’m skipping HomePod and will go with Sonos Beam instead. I ditched my iPad last November.

For now it’s just my iPhone 8+, Gen 0 Apple Watch 4 year old MacBook Pro.

I agree with you on many points, but the 20 dollar question is why stick around and continue to be disappointed?

You make it sound like that by fondling the Note 9, you are somehow threatening to leave Apple. Do you think they are going to react or care?

Buy a Note 9, be happy. In your defense I too have become frustrated. Partly because the Apple products I use have not been updated in years (Mac Mini and Macbook Air), and the wait between keynotes is always filled with rumors and predictions that makes things even more frustrating. This is the year they are going to update the Mac Mini. Been saying that for four years.

I waited until the latest Keynote to see what Apple was releasing before I get a new phone. I will not be buying a new iPhone. I too am looking at the Note. Beautiful phone. So is the Galaxy S9 series. Cant' decide.

I feel too many people feel beholden to Apple. It's like a bad marriage. You are unhappy but won't leave, so you stay and become miserable. I say do what a lot of divorced people do. Sever the ties, start over and find someone new and interesting.

Hate to break it to you:
  • iPhone Xs: 5.8-inch OLED, 1125 x 2436, 458ppi
  • iPhone Xs Max: 6.5-inch OLED, 1242 x 2688, 458 ppi
  • Galaxy Note 9: 6.4-inch OLED, 1440 x 2960, 516ppi

So what did all the competition come out with over this period of time? Anything groundbreaking?

If your being hard on Apple you gotta day they were equally or if not worse.

For me it's the fact the iPhone cameras are always at least 4/5th best every year now.

The 5 and maybe 5S were the last time it was probably the best you could buy on a phone.

Samsung, Wahway and Google literally destroy it every year now.

Don't even get me started on the front camera grainy mess.

Why don't you pick up a new hobby that isn't reliant on the commercial decisions of massive companies? Baking, origami, woodwork, finger-painting, there are endless things you can do with your time that won't upset you.
