Right now....the iPad 3 is fastest jailbroken iPad available. With no jailbreak in sight for ios 6 . I would hold on to the 3 as it could end up being the one to have for jailbreakers .

Im glad you like the 4, i couldn't to myself justify getting the 4 knowing a redesign with better batteries is around the corner (spring). I got the mini as more of a stop gap but its growing on me. Its very fast for what i use it for (coming from a ipad1 to an ipad3 to a mini) but not crazy about the new cables but apple is forcing that on all new models

Nobody knows whether there will be a new one in the spring. They might not release a new one until next fall.

People can keep boosting the speed of the NEW ipad to justify there reason for losing money on. 3 Gen and adding money to buy a 4th Gen. Fact is just like the iPhone 4s to 5 the speed difference is minimal.

You might notice some speed games in games but losing apps and surfing the web is not that much faster.

You'll lose money again when the new 5th Gen does out with different deign and better processor. 3 Gen owners will see decent gains where the upgrade year,y gang won't notice much.

I feel some people have an ego issue and need to have the latest and greatest. Each to their own though

I just bought my first iPad, 3 days ago. So happy the 4th generation came out when it did. I see so many people say it's not worth it, but that's because they already have one. For a first time owner it's an amazing device. I got the white 32GB wifi only model :)

Your right about that, no one has a clue what apple will do. Im guessing they will come out with the new redesigned Ipad retina in the spring to get new sales and keep the company in the spot light and come fall come out with the mini retina. Just a guess.

No so fast..., I have the 3rd gen iPad and since I don't play much games this one is still perfect for me, I don't need the extra power of the 4th gen because I use mine mostly for reading and web surfing, I think we need better multitasking for iOS and more serious productive apps that can use that "extra power" rather than that bunch of games, and off course 2GB of RAM doesn't hurt anyone, if some day a serious programming IDE and more "productive apps" come out I would switch to a new one, otherwise I will stick to a laptop for most of my job...

lol sad? Someone gets worked up easily. I like pushing your buttons!:D

In other words, you're a troll? After crying foul and talking about reporting me for my posts!

But you're mistaken, I'm not worked up, I'm just calling you out. Like I said, sad.

I agree. It's not that People are saying the iPad 4 is not an excellent product. I think most would agree that it is. Instead, they are saying the iPad 3 is so good,it's not worth upgrading to the 4 for the incremental benefits the 4 brings. Me....I went from a 32Gb wifi only original to a 32Gb wifi only 4 and couldn't be happier.

Lol I get excited when I see I have a quote notification from you. Highlight of my day? Certainly not. I still grab my mythical pop corn and sit back to see what new giber gaber you think of. Many lolz after I'm done reading your silly comments!

This. In certain edge cases, like people who insist on photo/movie editing on the iPad (heard of a laptop?!), the 4 is possibly a worthwhile upgrade. To the VAST majority, I think it's a complete waste of money upgrading, and a case of people just wanting the newest and shiniest on principle.

I am sorry but you can't justify getting an iPad 4th gen when you have an iPad 3. You really can't.

It is a tough sell. Maybe if you are really into the Lightning connector and doing a lot of iMovie and heavy gaming. If you sold your 3 well and the upgrade is only $100-200, then maybe....

Not the intended outcome, but at least some good comes of it, so I guess I can't really complain...

It's not actually up to you to tell people what they can and cannot justify for themselves. Even the simple, "because I want it, and that's that" is justification enough.

But I can think of many other justifications, some of which you may find more to your liking (not that it's any of your business, but to quell your sense of disapproval of the actions of others):

  • They need higher capacity than what they currently have.
  • They want the other color.
  • They want cellular data.
  • They don't want cellular data (and can sell their old one for enough to basically make it a wash).
  • They are going to pass their old one down to someone else (child, SO, parent, friend, etc.).

But, like I said, "I want one" is justification enough as far as anyone but the person doing the purchasing is concerned.

my guess is the opposite. I think you will see a mini retina in the spring and the new ipad 5 in the fall.

I upgraded my iPhone 4 to iPhone 5 and the difference in speed was huge!

I've done multiple tests in apps on my ipad 4 Vs the 3, there is about a 1-2 second difference in opening apps, with no noticeable difference in smoothness.

I also compared the speaker side by side with the same track and the sound is exactly the same.

if you have a 3 you should wait for the 5....if you have the 4, you should skip the 5 b.c you will get a lot of use out of the power the 4 offers.

Still it's ridiculous.
The iPad 4 is not twice as fast... let's be reasonable here. It's probably a bit faster, but not something you are going to experience in gaming. And if you really need the extra power because you are working with iMovie as much, you probably should be doing that on a mac/pc.

The lightning connector is a sort of valid point... but let's face it. That's the world biggest FirstWorldProblem, and not something worth 100-200 USD

Your point is very hard to argue with. I would imagine iPad 3 owners are better served by hanging on to their iPads until iPad 5 comes out if they want to continue using that platform and size and weight are not an issue.

No way I would upgrade from an iPad 3 to a 4. The iPad four is literally the same thing as the iPhone 4 to the 4S. Same casing, design, just faster internals.

I would just about bet the house that the next iPad (5th generation) is going to come out next October, and will feature many of the same attributes the current iPhone 5 has. Major changes will be the in-cell screen technology to significantly reduce the overall thickness of the screen, and hence the device overall. I also think they will do something (have no idea what) to address the issue of weight on the device as well, bringing it back down or possibly lower than the iPad 2's weight.

One area where the upgrade to the 4 may be worth it is in photo editing - applying filters etc. are cpu dependant and I would imagine the improved cpu will make a noticeable difference.
Also consider third party movie player apps that rely on software decoding for non Apple formats since Apple restricts access to hardware acceleration for these tasks - there will be an improvement in fps for these apps.

Very true, if you are a hardcore gamer or are a Power user for productivity apps such as photo/video editing, then I would agree, the upgrade to the iPad 4 would most definitely be worth it.

All that being said, I would bet a fairly substantial amount of money that a majority of those looking to upgrade from the iPad 3 to the iPad 4 have no such needs, and are simply looking to possess Apple's latest and greatest, which by the way there is nothing wrong with. However, there is no real reason to upgrade in most cases IMHO.

I know three people who made the switch from 3 to 4, and *all of them* say it was worth it in spades.

I may pull the trigger on a 4 soon.

We've had a iPad 2 64GB GSM since launch and I hardly get to use it, since my son and wife use it mostly.

I bit the bullet and got the 4, but since we only used the GSM one time, I got the wifi.

Anyway, this thing is amazing. It's hard to even look at a non-retina screen after using this. I never had a 3, so I can't compare, but this thing could replace a laptop, it's that awesome.
