Not to be rude, but why is it that all of your posts are annoying?
They're not annoying, they're fun. MR would be a poorer place if Macgeek2005 left.

By all means, discuss his ... hmmm ... shall we say "ideas", in the community forum threads he started, but if you don't know how to help him get iChat working, don't bother posting.

My iChat was qutting on my all the time when I was switching accounts (under the file menu "Switch to:" (since my GF and I share the comp)

when id switch, it would crash.

open it up and switch immediately, it was stable.

found out it was CHAX, a useful iChat addon. Needed to update that, BAM fixed the problem.

Do you use CHAX?

I've done everything on that 9 step list except for run OnyX and reinstall the system. I'll do that right now.

By the way I should have you guys know how this started.

My brother wanted to play Big Bang Chess with me, so he dropped a copy of Big Bang Board Games from his new iMac into my drop box. When I opened Chess, it unexpectedly quit, along with iChat. And since then iChat has had this problem.

I have deleted every trace of the big bang board games, and the problem persists.

And more info emerges....

Um, have you got enough HDD space to do an archive/install? Or better yet, is everything backed up to the point where you could do a clean install? That would most definitely solve the problem and could fix some little niggling ones that pop up from time to time.

OK - seriously dude, typing in caps and being angry or the whole mad face :)mad: ) is going to make you look bad. Seriously. Just.. ask what I can do, you know? Don't say for a thread title i'm SO PISSED AT ICHAT!!OMGZ 123!!!!11 or something like that. Tell what you've done, what you've installed, etc, in the first post - that way we can try to help you. :)

That game or whatever has corrupted iChat's files, so you haven't deleted them all yet.

Honestly, I hate to say this, but just reinstall the OS, and just don't install that game.

Let us know.

I just ran Onyx, deleted the iChat preferences again, and restarted and zapped the P-Ram. It's in the boot up procces right now.

Does this problem occur without an iSight attached? Just curious.

I don't have an iSight. But, the problem is persisting, after doing all of what I posted above.

So, i'm reinstalling the system. If I do an Archive and Install, I don't have to back up any data right?

whoa. When I was booted up on the install CD, I decided to run disk utility, and it says my hard drive needs repair!!!!!

It's all big bang board games fault

NOOOOO!!!!!! It says it can't repair the volume!!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!!

What now??? Quick, tell me, before I kill myself!!

OK, again, chill.

What Mac is this on again?

The HD is failing, dude, try and do a reinstall of the OS, if you can...

a CLEAN install, not an archive and install
CLEAN. :)

CLEAN. :)

It's on my G4 tower. I have 2 80GB hard drives in there, and the startup disk is the one with the problem.

I just managed to get back to the desktop, and i'm gonna back up all my data, and erase the hard drive, that usually fixes hard drive problems.

Dude, it's saying there is a problem with the hard drive I don't think a clean and install will fix it.. ;)

That's why i'm copying my entire hard drive to an external one, and wiping it clean. Then i'll install the system again.

And you'll be installing it right back on a drive that has problems.

It's not the files on the drive that have the problems, it's the drive itself regardless of what, if any, files are on it.

Um. How's that supposed to fix it?

EDIT: Exactly, Josh.

I've fixed numerous hard drives that disk utility said couldn't be fixed. I can do it again. Remember, i'm a macgeek.

Your HDD is busted, I think now this might not be Big Bang Board Games' fault. That it stuffed up a bunch of your programs like Chess and iChat may have just been symptoms of a dying hard-drive.

That sucks, mine died a while back and I had to have it replaced - wasn't fun.

If you're a true macgeek, how come you had to come here for help? :p :D

If I have to get a new one, i'm buying the 750GB seagate hard drive.

Are you this way in real life? Do people avoid you at all costs? Just curious..

And I don't think installing that game destroyed your hard drive, kid. Perhaps, in one of your various fits of rage, you threw or punched your machine?

How, exactly, if you don't mind me asking?

It's a process of erasing the hard drive numerous times, and unplugging the machine.

Erasing as in formatting? Zeroing? What does unplugging the machine do to fix a "broken" hard drive?

So, is this failing hard drive one you fixed before?
