I have no idea how to do this, so I ask you guys for help :)

Around Christmas I'll be getting an iPod touch, and I'd like to add some apps and change icons.

Do I just jail break the touch via the script AriX wrote and use installer.app? And what application do I use to change icons and names of apps? I want to name MobileChat "iChat" and change it to an iChat icon and make the MobileMail named "Mail" and change it to a default iPhone icon. How can I do that, and where can I get the iPhone icon for Mail?

Thanks a lot, I don't know what the hell I'm doing and I'd just like to clear things up lol

Wait till Feb. when you will be able to do this without possibly bricking your iphone.

I guess I should, only a couple months away.

Does Meebo work on the iPod touch?

I just read that Installer.app works without hacking anything, is that true?

Not sure. But if you don't get it till Christmas I would still rec that you wait.

I am willing to bet that Feb. is actually apple just messing with the deadline and that we will see it released at Macworld in mid Jan.

That's only two weeks if I am correct to wait.

Then I'll wait, two months isn't very long.

Since Apple introduced web apps, that'll keep me busy until the 3rd-party apps are officially supported.

If Apple has not seen fit to release a chat program, and Apple will control which apps get in the iPhone d/l list and which don't, why do you think Apple will allow chat apps? They could easily do one, if they wanted. I think they do not want one on the phone.

It should be noted that Installer.app has always relied on hacking. It's just whether you do the hacking or allow Installer.app to do its automated hacking. There is no difference.

"Bricking" is misinformation spread by competitors of Apple struggling to catch up.

The common methods of "hacking" the iPhone or iPod touch ONLY involves installing a software program and changing some software settings.

Hacking via jailbreak, etc. does NOT "brick" the phone. If the new firmware causes incompatibility with the installed software, then all you have to do is to restore the software to factory defaults. It might take time, but most people know the risks of firmware updates to jailbreaked iPhones, so it will apply to iPod touch as well.

And yes, installer app is now available for iPod touch. There is a nice IM program on iPhone, probably available for iPod touch too.
