Uhh. I have the 17" PB... And the resolution does not suck at all. People think it sucks because there are laptops that have higher resolutions, but in reality, 1.2+ million pixels is plenty for photoshop. And being photoshop, sure a higher resolution would be nice, but by all means, it does not suck as it is now...
maybe if you do web graphics but 1440 x 900 is nothing when doing print.

Really, given what's available out there right now, she should look into getting a Thinkpad. They're much better than a Dell or the current line of Powerbooks.

I have looked into the new thinkpads and I don't agree with your assesment. I know that they are well built (much like the PBs) but they do not offer much more (if anything) as far as their specs. If I were going to get a non apple laptop I would go with a sony (maybe from their FS seris (of course with dedicated graphics)) They are really nice comps... the only problem is the need to format them when you purchase them to be able to put a usable OS on it, they should give the option to buy blank and not like those stupid open dells!!! anyways I digress, my point is that ThinkPads are no better than PBs.

They have a much better reputation for reliability than a powerbook, and you can configure them to be as powerful as you want. No comparision. The only thing the Powerbook has going for it is the shiny metal case ('oh...shiny!") and the better OS.

I understand, but if you're doing print, why bother with a 17" screen in the first place?
cause this discussion is about laptop computers.

I'm an Avid Photographer and Photo Editor for our college paper.
I've also owned a Powerbook 15" (1.25ghz) for almost two years now, and have recently bought a 2005W Dell monitor.
Without question I won't even do serious photoshop work on my powerbook screen again. B&W doesn't look the same (important when doing color photo to BW to print). Also colors aren't nearly as true on ANY laptop screen.
Yes, laptops can do photoshop work, especially basic stuff. But for true work that will go to print, a more color accurate depiction of you photo is necassary.

I would say get the 15" and pick up a 17" external for $250.
Otherwise pick up the 20" wide Dell for $420 after discount.

I wouldn't let the max resolution of a notebook be a defining factor in which to get for PS work

Well, I just got mine, and I like it, SO THERE! :D

Peace im not saying the current machines bad I personally (opinion) think that It is to overpriced these days but I gurantee that youll love yours.

You could always lend her your PowerBook for a weekend
to let her see how it helps her with workflow and lack of hassles.

Then, if Apple does improve the line-up next week, she should be delighted.

1st I would wait til the new PB come out with the high res screens. Remember it is the year of HD. If she cares about High Res so much, get the 17" and a very nice 30" monitor. Never will you hear her compain bout the screen problem, unless if thats not big enough, dual 30" on a new G5 or that rumored bigger screen. I see no problems with a 15" monitor doing photoshop and I am a mobile user doing Indesign and Photoshop for yearbook.

HAhaha... all they have going for them is the shiny case and better OS. Go and configure a IBM that is better than the 15" or 17" PB. I will assume that you will pick the T43p. They are a very nice computer and they have some really good features (even some the the pb used to have but now do not like removable drive bays) But what is THAT much better here? You get a faster processor with a better FSB and a higher res screen. These are great and make those aspects of the hardware better than the PB but there is nothing revolutionary here, what else is there? The PB has its fair share of little advantages wether they are functional or cosmetic that might add up too... like a useable scrolling trackpad, slot loading drive, FW 400&800, can support 100GB HD, better software bundle, OSX (this reason alone makes the PB far superior to the IBM), etc...

Oh did I mention the shiny case... ;)

But really, what I was trying to say was that the IBM would not be what I would buy if I was to go x86 at the moment... there are better, cheaper options out there...
