I would argue you didn't if you would like to side on the fence that jailbreaking=degraded performance.
That's ignorance, and it's spread pretty freely around here by the individuals you're agreeing with. Don't be part of the problem.
This thread is actually quite funny. It's similar to someone modding their car then creating a thread that they are "going back to stock."
Ok, good for you. Again, it's probably fun and a good way for someone to pass their time if they are that bored. But ultimately, you'll never have the functionality AND performance unless you know what you're doing.

I'm really liking being jailbroken this time round. 🙂
But all I have installed is cycorder, pdanet and bitesms (for the quick reply and forwarding initially, but now I'm loving the landscape too and - 'cause I'm an idiot - having smileys back)
I haven't noticed any lag in anything apart from cydia, which has crashed a few times but I thought it was awful last time too so I'm not surprised. Jailbreaking's proving to be great for just a few choice apps. 🙂

Okay Mr.... what sort of things do you install that adds functionality, but does not degrade performance? I'm guessing only things like Cycorder and PDAnet. Using standalone apps is the only way to run jailbroken without a loss in performance. Running anything extra in the background is going to slow the iPhone down. It barely has enough RAM to handle the things it HAS to run in the background, why would you add more to that?
The only reason it lags is because you change the theme with winterboard. My iPhone 3G has been jailbroken for ages and it hasn't ever lagged for me. I don't have any stupid theme or icons changed. It looks normal except that it has cydia, installer, and some other apps. You should really consider testing it out thoroughly before blaming your lag on that.

I wish I knew more about what I was doing....I know there's a way to customize and create your own themed style look without winterboard.
Since I don't know what I'm doing, I'm actually running like 3 themes at the same time, but I've ssh'd into the themes and deleted the things I didn't want, so only 1 or 2 things from each theme are running.
I've also replaced lock/unlock/typing/sms/voicemail tones via ssh so I don't see how that would slow it down.
As it is, I can hardly tell the difference from stock.....the themes I'm using must not be memory hogs..

Just by having WinterBoard installed, your iPhone is running slower. I've done tests with NO THEMES running at all. WinterBoard alone makes your iPhone slower. You probably can't tell because you don't have to iPhones running side by side like me 🙂
Yeah, you're the only person that can make claims on this board because no one else has multiple iPhones. 🙄
And you're incorrect. Winterboard, with nothing enabled, does not slow down your phone. And hell, if your beef is with WINTERBOARD, it has nothing to do with JAILBREAKING.
Again, ignorance that runs rampant throughout the board. I feel bad for the MR user that reads that tripe and believes it enough to pass it along.
You are really getting on my nerves with your Jailbreak defense....seriously. Your car mod analogy is no way the same as modding a phone. Not even close! I will agree that if I jailbreak and do nothing else, it may run the same. But once you start adding things, it decreases the performance. Wake up! Jailbreaking is awesome and really shows the potential in the phone that Apple is not giving us, but it causes performance issues...PERIOD. I loved my phone with all that crap on it, but it didnt perform the way I like it. We are talking a couple secs here and there. Just enough to bother me. I could have dealt with it, but I didnt want to. You're part of the problem by taking stance on what clearly is an apparent losing battle. Yet you defend it like I am talking bad about it. It's great, it's just not for me. Why jailbreak if I can't add the things I like?

I agree with that. I did use Winterboard. I did have 15 themes in it. I was running homescreen...I provided pics of what I had.
You just contradicted yourself, not to mention ignore the comments in the thread while stating the obvious. Good job.
By comparison... you have a PC that has 2 GB's of ram (and equally decent specs). You browse Macrumors and decide to listen to music at the same time? Do you see a performance decrease? More resources are being used but you don't see any perceived change, correct? What happened if you decided to burning a DVD and encode a video to watch on your iPhone while still browsing Macrumors? Think you'll see a drop in performance?
Unfortunately I'll have to answer for you, since you can't grasp what is being said in the thread. YES.
I guess you can enjoy your "optimal" phone then. Enjoy the bliss. Just stop posting false information, that's all.

You are incorrect. I've done testing. I had one iPhone running completely brand new setup and one jailbroken iPhone running completely default except for WinterBoard. Both iPhones had a fresh install with no backups. Winterboard made the iPhone slower even with NO themes activated.

Just Jailbroke today for this very reason. Enough is enough, i needed a tethering option.
Jailbreaking doesn't degrade performance. Installing a bunch of hideous themes and background processes and extra crap does.

I observed this phenomenon many months ago -- I installed an sshd and logged in to my phone. Using top, I took a look at the idle consumptions of SpringBoard with WinterBoard installed + active, with it installed (but with no themes active) and without WinterBoard. Even without any themes active, WinterBoard increases SpringBoard's idle RAM usage.
There's a difference b/w performance decrease and a program residing in memory.

Look, this argument won't go anywhere. The point is jailbreaking your phone does NOT cause the perceived "lag" everyone is talking about; The applications you use, depending on what it is and how you use them, do. When you jailbreak, you're pretty much unlocking a closed door.
Either way, I'm happy I have the option of jailbraking. If you're happy with default, what's the real problem? The only issue I ever had was the misinformation being spread by some of your comments.

I guess the problem for me was the novelty of jailbreaking wore off. I have to admit Cycorder and Snapture were pretty cool. Intelliscreen was awesome, when it worked. Seems like it didnt update at random times. Snapture also locked up on occasion.
I guess I could tinker around and find some sort of jailbreak configuration that had the apps I thought were worth jailbreaking for, and had stability.
I do find the information helpful on these forums, but in the end, I'm going to have to see it work on my phone before I put much stock in it.

That is true. However, due to the way that the iPhone OS handles low memory conditions memory exhaustion has a very substantial performance impact; thus anything that causes a non-trivial increase in idle RAM usage (think WinterBoard) may cause performance problems to appear in a number of scenarios.

hello everyone, i'll be getting my phone today but like you all i dont want it to be jailbroken..which it currently is. Where can i find the steps to undo the jailbreaking? If i do this will i still be able to use my Tmobile sim.. whichi currently will be using with a sim adapter? Thanks alot. 😉

My phone is currently coming with the lastest 2.2.1(Iphone 3G 8GB) software if i use itunes to restore it.. what software will it go to, do i have to download or purchase the latest software from Itunes? As far as activation goes..I'll be using a sim adapter to use my Tmobile SIM card.. what steps does the activation include?

Now you're trolling. I said it may not cause issues in performance if you jailbreak and do NOTHING but have Cydia and Installer. Although, if you jailbreak, install tons of apps, themes, widgets, etc....IT DOES cause performance issues. So there is NO contradiction. To me the beauty of a jailbreak is the apps and such. I would rather not do it, if I can't add the things I had.

People act like it has to be all or nothing.
Just because you jailbreak, it doesn't mean you have to install EVERYTHING!
You can jailbreak and just install the things you know won't decrease the performance of the iPhone (Cycorder for example). That way you will still have some advantage over a stock iPhone but keeping the performance.
That's why people who jailbreak get annoyed at those who say jailbreaking slows the iPhone down: it doesn't, only if you install certain things that are memory hogs. But there's still plenty left that's not available to those with the stock firmware and that doesn't slow down the iPhone!
