It’s the same thing every year.

Apple has its iPhone event:

“Still no innovation” (Wakes up at 4:00am to preorder)

2 days after preorder:

“I still didn’t get a tracking number”

New iPhone Phone is delivered:

“It sucks. I’m returning it and keeping my iPhone_____”

“If Steve Jobs were still alive we wouldn’t have this mess”

Apple iPhone event 2023:

Repeat above steps.

When Apple introduced the notch, everyone slammed them.

Now they introduce a magnificient piece of UI/UX (that isn't even being taken advantage of, only Apple apps): bRiNg BaCk tHe NoTcH.

There is really no pleasing you, isn't there?

This.

I wouldn't purchase a phone just for something like dynamic island. That being said, it is definitely more noticeable than the notch when it is simply sitting there without any use but I don't find it very distracting either. I never recognized the notch but I found myself a few times glancing at the dark void at the top of the phone with the pill. Not being from a first world country helps with not caring about it though. 😊

It is narrower than the notch on iPhone 13. So IMHO it would look better and more subtle if Apple kept it as a narrower notch. They could even name it the dynamic peninsula (oh my) or whatever if they really want, and have the same functionality, just attached to the top of the screen.
Dynamic Peninsula is the name of the hack that jailbreak devs are developing for older iPhones.
Even gimmick but at least cheap than 2200€ of 14 Pro Max.

I was sure I wouldn’t be the only one that would think of that name. 😊

The DI sucks, plain and simple, it’s way more obvious unless you live in dark mode, the UI/UX on some of the animations is very un-apple. The face unlock animation is ugly as hell, the green on black just looks off and in your face compared to the old style you hardly noticed. I’ve always had the new iPhone and never had regrets. My 14 pro is now boxed up ready to send back, I swear down prefer the notch anyday.
I actually never minded the notch. I do agree the UI/UX on the animations does need some design work. But I actually have the opposite problem now— instead of seeing and noting when the Face ID is working, I don’t notice it enough to know it’s happening at all. I suspect, over time, I might appreciate that as a more seamless way to interact with the device.

Apple introduce reduced notch only for 13 series, probably DI was already implemented but “Hey, we could spent that for 14 and others, so we don’t need to upgrade (SoCs, screens, services)”.
Apple has turned unreliable with hw and sw features developed.
They have to produce these products on such a MASSIVE scale that the design must be necessarily iterative (hence the notch getting smaller on iPhone 13 series) and they have to be fairly cautious and slow about introducing new features. This does hold Apple back a bit from innovating on a yearly timetable. However, maybe they’ll use the iPhone Ultra as their cutting edge model to more quickly innovate in the future.

I don't use the dynamic island much because it doesn't have many apps using it. Its nifty when being utilized but one cannot use what is not available.

iPhone is due for an extra button, closer to our fingers on left/right side. Or both. Imagine if something like Action button from the Watch Ultra gets added to the phone, as a customizable function button.

We can use it as another input path, shortcuts, or even to trigger reachability.
Love this idea.

Imagine that next year the iPhone Pro will not have an island but full screen and the island will only be on cheap models, and all the enthusiasm for this ridiculous compromise will be zeroed, as has already happened with other “genial” solutions from Apple. Please go and buy the new Pros saying that the island is a compromise! 😅🤣🤦🏽
The FaceID camera and other hardware behind the DI have to go somewhere, so an iPhone without a cut-out is not currently possible. Perhaps it will be in a few years, but even then I doubt DI would disappear entirely because users are finding it useful to have background information presented on screen in this manner. If anything, I think the DI behavior with a future no-cut-out iPhone would be to keep the DI for its current uses and have it disappear to zero when it's not needed.

Also, what are you quoting with "genial" solutions? What does that even mean in context?

Is anybody else on the same boat?
I've upgraded from the 13 Pro Max, one of the reasons (apart from camera, display and a fresh new battery) was the Dynamic Island

I got so hyped when they presented it, and I thought it was a clever UI/UX design.

But now that it's almost 2 weeks that I've had the 14 PM I'm using it less than what I expected.
I don't listen to music that much on the phone, mostly through carplay. People that use public transportation will use it more I believe.

Also there were already two other places where you could control music.

Honestly I would prefer to have the notch back as it doesn't interfere with wide YouTube videos

Also, I believe this pill is more noticeable than the notch for two reasons:
The notch merged with the rest of the phone. The pill having that useless space above makes it more noticeable

The pill sits lower than the notch
In other words, your expectations were too high from the beginning. Now that your hype bubble has burst, suddenly it's the phone's fault.

The dynamic island functions exactly how it was shown in the keynote & all advertisements since then.

The Steve Jobs one always gets me.

The guy who said you were holding it wrong and thought an Apple Pencil sticking out of the bottom of an iPad lightning port was a good idea.

"Apple is getting greedy!"

Apple once tried to charge to enable 802.11 draft n wireless and charged $15 to add mail and notes apps to the iPod touch. Somehow these "lifelong fans" forget those moments.

Or, more likely, all these "OMG SO DISAPPOINTED" types never bought the phone at all. They just lie for attention.
