I work for the applecare in the cpu department
and i can yell you that I never get calls about hardly ANY of these issues

maybe 5-10 calls in the year+ I have been there.

like a previous poster said, you only see the complaints of people on a techie forum. so of course all you are going to see is hardware issues, and a few software issues.

I am in no way defending apple, and I'm not speaking on their behalf. I think they should fix these issues right away for ANY customer
just saying that even though you see it as a huge problem I rarely see these issues, and when I do I always help the customer get a replacement

I'm sure these problems are not your normal call, especially considering their not something you can fix over the phone, therefore I would imagine that most people wouldn't call you, and instead would take their product to the apple store. I knolw with my yellow tint issue and proximity sensor issue, I never once thought about calling applecare because I knew you couldn't swap out my screen over the phone.

It is a huge problem anytime a company won't fix widespread issues with their products, and acts like its the consumers causing thee issue. Holding your phone differently is not a customer friendly way to resolve an issue. Making a quality phone, or fixing the bad phone is.

Saying a problem isn't a huge problem doesn't really cut it because it is a huge problem for the individuals who are affected by buying shoddy hardware.

My brother bought an iMac 24 inch last year, my brother-in-law an iMac 24 inch last year and now a 27 inch iMac (Quad).
My brother had a trouble with a bad harddrive, but now his iMac runs flawlessly. My brother-in-law is very happy with his iMacs. To be honest, the last one he bought is significantly faster than my MacPro 2009 upgraded with an ATI Radeon 5870.
iMacs are the best bang for the buck.

Just anecdotal evidence, but I've had my iMac for just over a year now and have not had any issues and couldn't be happier with the purchase.

From what I've gathered from reading threads here, it might be the case that quality might be dropping, or maybe they're just more mac users so more people to go on forums to post about them.

you are correct, not every customer is going to call applecare for an obvious hardware problem. However I do feel that some people here blow this out of proportion. I think that every company has quality control issues and of course apple is never going to be immune.
With that being said, I feel that if this were a major issue, like the iphone 4 antenna problem, then even though its blatantly a hardware problem, I would still receive a lot of calls about it.

in regards to the phone I agree with you. In regards to the 09/10 imacs how are they not fixing things? They are constantly replacing yellow screens, noisy hard drives, etc. They aren't telling you to just live it with. you have a 14 day return policy and can always send them in for repair.
Along with those problems I see an equal amount of other hardware problems. Overall most people I talk to dont ever have hardware problems like every user seems to have on these forums.

Im not saying people dont have problems, and im not saying that the issues dont exist. Im simply stating that this isn't as widespread of a problem as these forums lead people on to believe.

These iMacs are more reliable than any before them. The only difference is there are more people than ever with access to the internet to whine and cry about anything that isn't 110% perfect.

They are fixing yellow screens right now, however when the problem first arose their response was less than assuring. They denied any problem for 3 months.

Same with the aentenna problem. They denied the problem until finally enough evidence was shown where they couldn't deny the problem any longer. This is what is troubling, their lack of taking care of their customers.

When I took my machine back, I had to argue with them for an hour to return it without a restocking fee, at which time I got a new machine which also had the yellow screen problem which they wouldn't take back without a restocking fee, and I still have it today with the yellow tint problem. I'm sure if I took it back now, they would replace the screen. What troubles me is their insistance in the beginning to not rectify the problem, and act as if it were somehow my problem.

Like most of us said, we don't have a problem with the frequency of Apple's problem, though the fact they haven't released a product without an issue in quite some time is troubling, what causes the problem is Apple's lack of professional response and caring for their customer base when a problem arises.

I'm a loyal Apple customer, but not blindly loyal, and if they continue to ignore their customers I will be looking for alternatives.

If you had just paid $2200 for a machine where 1/2 of the display was yellow tinted, you would complain as well.

It's not like I just bought a $300 E-Machine, I spent $2200. That's a lot of money to pay for a screen that you have to color balance images on the top half because the bottom is too yellow to do so.

Rubbish. I got a 27" iMac at the end of 2009 (November), and went through two replacements for the yellow screen with no hassle. One machine was captured and sent direct to engineering, and in the end I went back to Mac Pros. So this was way back when the 27"ers first launched, and still had to ship direct from China.

Your problem stems from individuals in a retail store not knowing what to do. AppleCare, the phone sales team, and Exec Relations knew the deal.

As many have said here and elsewhere, forums are indeed a great place to complain--rightfully or not. Over the past few months I have bought a new Samsung LCD TV and Blu Ray--and a fridge--and two Apple iPod Touches as gifts. All of these products have loads of complaints on various fourms about this and that not working properly, but I have no complaints with any of these products. Just the nature of forums, the minority--with complaints--does indeed have the loudest voice. :D

This may be the case, however it doesn't change the fact that I was unable to exchange it.

You definitely have to take what people are saying with a grain of salt. That being said, when hundreds, or thousands of individuals are on the message board saying the exact same thing, you have to take note.

After waiting a long time to afford an imac this thread is very disturbing. My 21.5 seems fine after one month but reliability is why I went with a mac.

i have a 27 inch '10 imac and i have had NO problems whatsoever

parents and sister got a 21.5in '09, 27 inch '09 and 13in '10 mbp and no problems at all there

it just seems to be bad luck for some

I would definitely agree with your theory of bad luck. Whether or not these Imac's are the most unreliable, I have no idea. I just know my experience with Apple for the last year hasn't been particularly good.

I think if they stopped trying to ignore these problems, no matter the scope, they would be much better off and would have happier customers.

I have been one complaining of my experience with Apple recently, however if yours is working fine, I wouldn't be stressed out about potential problems. In my experience, if you get one that works well from the beginning they are pretty reliable machines, or at least as reliable as any other PC maker, because they do after all use the same core parts as any other computer.

I would enjoy your purchase and not stress out, but I would think about purchasing Apple Care just in case.

I purchased an iMac(27 inch i7) a few months ago...No issues whatsoever - By far the best piece of hardware I've ever owned. My first Apple product(after 15 years of Windows) - not disappointed!
