iMac 20" Display

So, I've been really confused and unclear about what exactly this displays. So, here's what I know:
-The resolution is 1680 x 1050 Pixels (Which, is HD because anything above 720 is)
-The graphics card in my computer is an HD capable card

What I want to know:
Can I view 1080 HD at just lower quality, or will a 1080HD resolution simply not work?

Any other tips or anything would be gladly taken, as well.

It will drop (convert) the 1080p signal to the resolution of the display, i.e. not much.

I was hoping it would do something like that! Now I just need to get some stuff in HD to watch, ha ha... ANy ideas?
