I have been planning to move over to Macs for a couple years. I made the terrible mistake in investing on a Dell XPS 15in a couple years ago and that was my last straw for any Windows devics.

I was originally planning on getting a MacBook 15in, but I realized that my laptop primarily stays on my desk and the iMac just sounds like a better value. I like the beefier gpu on the iMac and the 5k 27in screen. Since I am in school, I was thinking of getting an iPad along with the iMac that I can use for notes at school.

My question: Is there anything I can’t do with an iMac and iPad combo instead of just getting a MacBook Pro ?

Sound like a smart purchase for your needs, lighter/smaller device on the move and a better desktop. The screen on the 27" iMac is splendid!

An iOS device is more restrictive than a full computer running macOS/Windows, but it is good enough for a lot of users. Try it out during the 14 days return period, don't bring your laptop at school and you'll see if there's anything you need that you can't do on iOS.

Also, you should probably get a good keyboard with your iPad for note taking.

I’ve been working just with iOS (iPadPro-iPadMini) for a year now (my last iMac broke). I’ve just bought a new iMac, but I’m surprised by iOS maturity and I really can do all my job with an iPad.
You can add nice devices later on. I have a Lightning/usb memory stick, for example.
If you get an iMac, you get also a small and easily portable & very convenient BT keyboard -to use with your iPad- with it.
Use iCloud Drive, Dropbox... or all at the time, and you’ll have what you need in every machine.
I’m a teacher, and I find an iPad ideal for academic work. Low weight, portability and easy handling are big advantages for school work. If you want a really powerful system, go for iPad Pro; you won’t regret (if you can afford).
I feel I like to have a desktop and just spent 3000€ for one, but I must confess it’s a luxury and I could go on with iOS only.

I have been using the iMac & iPad (Air and 9.7" Pro) combo for years now, including when I went back to school in the seminary. Now that iOS has folder support, it is even more of an ideal combo.
