Hi,

So I have a base model 2017 iMac 5k. I have noticed for a while now that when running CPU intense programs or doing anything CPU intense my iMac will not turbo up to the advised turbo speed of 3.8 GHz.

So I wanted to know if there is anyway I can fix this or if apple have made OS not allow the computer to turbo up to the speed of 3.8 GHz.

My computer will turbo up to 3.6 GHz and then sit there. It will not go higher than this. Below I have attached photos of this happening to stress test the cpu I am using yes > /dev/null

And here is the last 30 days using istat menus

With what?

Either your apps aren’t requiring the full 3.8, the CPU can’t put out or the test is flawed. No one reading this will know without putting it on a bench.

If t’s the CPU, time to replace the thermal paste and see if it improves. Are you up to that task?

Do you notice any effect on real world performance? Is this really a problem?

If it’s under AappleCare, that’s whom you talk to.

No 2 CPUs come out of the oven identically. All are tested and graded. The top level is sold retail. Apple’s requirements are lower and their specs reflect this—it makes many more available and lowers the price. Some PC makers have even lower tolerances and get the ones that Apple would reject (Intel does the testing and grading).

The point is that, if you replace yours with an Intel CPU sold retail, there will likely be a slight performance boost including TurboBoost. How much time and money do you wish to spend on this issue which is probably not a problem? .2 MHz? Really?

I’ll only bet 10¢ on this.

Apple’s specs say, “(wTurbo Boost up to x.xxHz)”

That is a direct quote and most likely to be what AppleCare will tell you when you ask.

LOOOOL

Somebody is mad, no need to reply if you're just going to be angry.

My test is not flawed, I have tried it on 1 core and all 4 with the same result. Thermal Paste wont change the performance in this test as the CPU should turbo instantly when the core is not at max temperature plus looking at my temps they are completely safe (not high at all).

And yes I am willing to change the thermal paste as I am planning to upgrade to and i7-7700k (probably within the month).

Honestly I just wanted to know if apple limited or not and that was why it wasn't hitting the speed or whether or not it was my CPU.

Whose mad besides you?

I could have just posted the Apple spec and stated that that Apple has made no promise. Clearly you don’t understand how Turboboost works.

Google is your friend.
