Are you talking on the internet? Or in general? If you are talking internet since some pages use small font there is a setting in Safari to allow for a "minimum font size" and it can't go below that size. Its found under:

Safari -> Preferences -> Advanced

And check "Never use font sizes smaller than: " and choose a number. I have 14.

Did you try this OP?

I tried that last time, and found it has a tendency to cause the lettering to jumble up and overlap one another. I recommend chrome instead, words seem okay to me. :)

Correct me if I am wrong here, I may have missed the post.

If it is a new iMac with Lion (or even without Lion), did you get the touch pad with it? The pinch to zoom should work for you. Myself I don't have a touch pad and I just hit Command ++ and it increases the screen and font size. My eyesight ain't the best but this works like a charm.

I haven't noticed a degradation of clarity with it.

I would be interested to see if you have tried that.

I consider having a fairly bad eyesight, I can't read anything without glasses unless it's literally only as far as my nose. But surprise surprise, with glasses or contacts I have no trouble reading stuff on the 27" iMac I use at work daily.

So unless you have a specific vision or reading problem, I suggest you either get your prescription checked, get glasses if you don't already have them and finally set the iMac at a comfortable distance from you.

If that doesn't help, look into getting either a Macbook Pro or Mac Mini plus an external display with a resolution no higher than 1920x1200 at a size no smaller than about 23".

Easy...

Well, I'm a very new Mac user (1 week) after being with windows since 3.0 and other stuff going back to 1982 (when I built my first computer). I have a 27" iMac with Lion installed. Being almost 70, my eyesight isn't perfect, but these two 'tricks' allow me to work comfortably enough that I love the Mac!

It's easy to increase operative text size in almost all applications by the use of the 'cmd +' keys, and on the odd occasions where that doesn't do what you want, this will: 'opt/cmd/+' to increase the entire screen size, 'opt/cmd/-' to put it back again...

Sorry if you already knew this but I hadn't seen that second one mentioned!

I'm kind of in the same boat. I've had my new 27" i5 for a week now, and just can't seem to get used to the big screen. Part of it is older eyes (52), part is having to tilt my head up to see the top of the display, or adjust me seat too far above my desktop than I feel comfortable with. Also moving my whole head around vs. just my eyes is extra work. I also have a problem with migraines, and don't think this helps.

How much trouble is it to exchange to a 21.5? Can I exchange a BTO at my local A-store? Or should I stick with the monster, in time I'll learn to appreciate this awesome display in spite of its disadvantages?

Stay with it for a while

When I first got mine I told my wife it would have to go back because I couldn't cope with that 27" display... at first, I actually felt slightly nauseous in front of it.

But you know what? I stayed with it, raised my seat _a bit_ and now I love it!

I'm a writer so I spend a lot of time in front of it and I might've gotten used to it fairly quickly because of that. I love being able to have 2 or 3 research documents open as well as 'Pages' without having to switch between the windows as I had to on my old 21" Iiyama/Windows 7 set up.

I think you'll adjust to it pretty soon and then be as thrilled as I am with mine!

I'd strongly suggest a pair of "computer glasses" which are prescribed for sharpest focus at the distance you sit from the display. I couldn't get by without them! Mine have big lenses (so I don't have to move my head looking at my dual monitor setup) and are also bifocals with a small reading area at the bottom.

Unfortunately, unlike Windows has been for over 10 years, OS X has never offered scalable system fonts.

Ah-ha, that is good input. I'm also a writer (disguised as an engineer) and the one thing I would mind giving up is having Pages open in one window and whatever subject I'm researching in the window right next to it. Granted I could just fire up any of my other computers (PC laptop, iPad) but the elegance of side-by-side is awfully compelling.

Maybe I'll just stick with the Monster for a bit. Money's not particularly an issue, so I can always sell it in a year, my excuse for buying the Next Generation.

You could have achieved the same result with W7 as the OS is very good at putting documents side by side e.g. working from two MS Word docs at the same time. Simply drag to each corner of the screen, job done. I find Open Office for the Mac very nice, a good facsimile of MS Office and "Free". :D

Do you have any suggestion? Any ideas and suggestion please?

I'm know for being a smartazz at times, but I will be honest here.

I have a similar complaint though I do not have a 27" iMac. I have a 17" i Macbook Pro that I bought three months ago.

My solution was to acquire a pair of reading glasses and the difference is amazing.

Still though I am not happy with the 17" MBP and may be selling/trading it for a 27" iMac.

Funny thing, the fonts on the 15" Macbook Pro are larger because of the screen resolution.

i just moved mine to the corner of my desk, set res at 1920 x 1080, set safari fonts 14, and never smaller than 12. I use Zoom when needed.
Happier iMac owner now. When I need the screen size I change back to 2560 X 1440.

Yes... but with W7 I only had a 21" screen. On the Mac, I can have Scrivener open along with two documents from Pages all side by side and readable without having to switch between windows. I have Open Office but I actually prefer the Mac software now I've gotten used to it!
