That's odd. My 3.1GHz Core i5 barely makes any noise. I can only hear it if I put my ear towards the top vent.
 
iStats was the culprit for me

Just a FYI, I had the same issue (Optical Drive fan running ~3000 rpm for no reason on my iMac 27" late 2009) and uninstall iStats Menu did the trick. Looks like an issue that happened after Lion 10.7.1 update.

Uninstalling istats menu did the change to silence?

My 27" 3,4 Mhz quad i7 iMac is running the HD fan with ca.5200 r/min after a moment without running any program. When starting it begins with ca.1100 runs and gets higher and higher until it crosses the line of 5000 runs.
Have to get it into service soon.

I will test this is see how it works out for me. I've had the issue with mine since I bought it to now. It's under AppleCare but I live 2 hours from an Apple Store.
