I have been using my iMac 27" i7 3.6 Late 2009 for Zoom conferencing with very good effect but I would like to be able to extend the display as I normally have 70-80 connections. I have obtained an iMac 27" i7 2.8 Late 2009 and would like to connect this to the other to accomplish extending the display.
I have read a few bits and pieces but these mostly refer to connecting different model machines and so I am not sure of what I need.
Is it just a mini-displayport to mini-displayport cable or is something else needed?
Would be most grateful for a knowledgeable answer on what is required. TIA :)

Please report your result here.
Especially the moment when you plug the cable in.
I'm quite curious about how the 2 iMacs decide which one works in Target Display Mode.
It works ... got me a 'Ivanky' mdp to mdp cable from Amazon, (not all mdp cables work!).
  • Connected mdp cable end to each of the 27" 2009 iMacs.
  • Powered up 1st iMac and logged in ... everything as normal.
  • Powered up 2nd iMac and logged in ... everything as normal.
  • Pressed CMD + F2 on the 2nd iMac and instantly it went to the second display.
Can now work with two displays. :)

Thank you for your info.

When I connect the PC or Mac Pro to iMac, it automatically turned into Target Display Mode, without CMD+F2 key pressed (cleaning PVRAM already).

Is the 2009 iMac 27" picky about ram speeds? Would it be possible to use 1333mhz ram in a 1067mhz ram speed 2009 iMac, along with the original Apple installed ram? I'm trying to upgrade from four gigs OEM ram with eight gigs of 1333mhz ram in the two empty slots.

I put 2 sticks of DDR3L (1.35V) 1600MHz to my 2009 and they worked fine. Working frequency was only 1333MHz.
Mixing 1066MHz with 1600MHZ will result in working frequency of 1066MHz.
But the advice here is: If possible, use the same type of RAM for all 4 sticks.
