high end 27" model
and configurable 27" option

i plan on purchasing a 27" imac in december but are the processor speeds a big difference or unnoticable? i will be using my imac for autodesk maya with a lot of animation and after effects

For you with what you want to use it for I would probably recommend the high end iMac with the i7.

3D animation = get the best computer that you can afford and it still won't be enough.

I'm not just a dips**t saying that either. I also do 3D animation.

^ What he said.

I'm also doing Animation work and it will require a lot of rendering so it's wise to get the highest config you can possibly afford. Also, the difference between the i5 and i7 is hyper threading. This feature enables virtually 8 cores, 2 for each physical quad-core, whereas the i5 only has 4.

I actually think the entire question is irrelevant.

Back in the days of the 486 chip, the same questions were asked. (I'm from the prepress side of things so photoshop etc...today the CS suite,FCPX).

The best answer I ever received?

Get the best damn computer available that you can afford and or justify.
