I just got my refurbished i5 two days ago. I really like this machine but I noticed that while browsing or doing minimal work, the hard drive (I'm assuming) makes this sort of crackling or growling sound such as an empty stomach growling. It's not really loud but I can still hear it. Is this a cause of concern? I'm thinking of calling Apple Care to take care of this.

Sounds like the drive is merely accessing or writing data.

That's what drives do, it's what they're best at!

Perhaps it's just a loud batch. This is a common annoyance, as some drives are simply whisper quiet. It doesn't mean it's failing, it just fails at life.

that's what I was thinking. In the apple store I can't really here anything since it's super loud in there. just wanted to make sure it's nothing major.

It seems that the hard-drives have 3 ways to go:

1.) Constant humming when powered on (can be removed partially by putting something between the desk and the iMac

    2.) Activity noise (stomach growling)

3.) this is only a rumor - a perfectly silent harddrive

In my opinion version 1.) is the worst. I have issue number 2, but as it is the normal hard-drive noise i'm familiar since about 20 years, thats alright with me :)
