This happened on several Macs before, but most recently on my iMac (5K from 2014). When I plug in an iPhone or iPad the charge starts and stops and starts again. Like it keeps connecting and loosing connection and connecting again. When I change the port, it seems ok. Later, both ports work fine. Then, sometimes, it is a different port that does the same thing. And it only seems to happen with iOS devices. I had a similar experience with both MBPs too and with different iPhones and iPads.

Anyone has any idea what’s going on?

Did you try swapping cables? Even the Apple supplied lightning cables wear out.

Hmm. Good point, I'll try a different cable. Although, I have a lot of Apple lightning cables and I'm sure it wasn't tied to a specific one. But I will try changing.

Happens to me sometimes. And I charge my iOS devices always from charger.
I just unplug lightning port, flip it over & plug again. It fix it.
Lightning connection seems to be very sensitive... Try cleaning the lightning hole in your phone also; just use a brush lightly.
