I read it as:

He removed the 3.5" HDD and replaced it with a 2.5" SSD.

Then he then "unfused" it removing the logical volume group in diskutil.

After unfusing the factory drives he left the factory 128GB SSD installed.

Because he has the new 2.5" SSD and the factory 128GB SSD installed and he did not say that he created a fusion drive out of the two new SSD drives it will show up as two separate drives.

Aside from having a single drive it would be pointless and cause unneeded wear on both SSDs by creating a fusion drive out of them. I have never even seen someone create a Fusion drive using two or more SSDs so I don't know if that is even possible. Certainly it is not recommended.

Well, seeing as PCIE SSDs are significantly more speedy than SATA SSDs maybe we'd see even better everyday uses performance? Unnecessary, but would be cool to investigate.

do you think will be able to do the same with the new iMac with skyline. If we buy a 3.3ghz and later down the road upgrade to 4.0ghz?

Hi all,

Just wanted to share my experience with upgrading the CPU on the newest iMac 5K. I also upgraded the "Fusion Drive" to a standard 256GB SSD. I unfused it and I left the 128GB Fusion Drive SSD on the board.

Stock CPU: i5-4690
Upgraded CPU: i7-4790K

Stock HD: 1TB Seagate + 128GB PCI-E SSD
Upgraded: 256GB Samsung EVO Pro + Stock 128 GB PCI-E SSD

RAM: 8GB Stock
Upgraded: 8GB Stock + 16GB Crucial RAM = 24GB Total.

I've also attached the performance figures using GeekBench. If you're up for a challenge and not afraid of damaging your iMac, go for the upgrade. It is surprisingly easy once you know how to take the LCD off of the main frame. That is a pain because Apple uses adhesive strips. More details on the iFixit guide which is what I used to upgrade.

Overall, it is not too difficult. Be careful and don't bend the LGA1150 socket pins but even that could be fixed (with a lot of pain).

Cheers lads and happy holidays!

What are your thoughts on installing 2133mhz memory? If money was no issue, would you do it?

Just Upgraded my imac 5k

Did you upgraded the Blade SSD?. Which part number or model did you use?. Any advice?.

I cannot wait to put one on mine (onyl got the 1Tb HDD installed).

That is awesome dude!, that is quite the answer I have been looking for since I bought mine last September.

Please let me know whenever you can, thank you in advance.

Very tempting to do. I just ordered RAM to upgrade my 8GB to 32GB.

I'm thinking to add a 256-512-1TB SSD, in addition to the 1 TB 7200 RPM HD. Is this difficult to setup after the SSD is installed to the logic board after hardware upgrades?

Also, now I'm thinking if I should throw in a CPU if I'm going to rip it open.

I have the MK462LL/A model A1419 iMac 5k Retina.

These are stock specs:
27" Retina 5K IPS Display
3.2 GHz Intel Core i5 (Skylake) - to replace CPU or Not?
8GB of 1867 MHz DDR3 RAM - Upgrading to 32 GB
1TB 7200 rpm HDD - Adding a 512 or 1 TB SSD
AMD Radeon R9 M380 GPU (2GB GDDR5)

Hey buddy, got any P/N for me?. Would like to know which blades are compatible and which are not.

Thank you once again.

sorry... forgot to get back to you, was a bid busy lately, there is 2 brand of APPLE SSD which work on iMac 5K late 2014, TS0256F (Toshiba) and SM0256F (Samsung), they can be found in the Macbook Air and the Macbook Pro Retina Late 2013, i recomend you to get the samsung one SM0256F, because there is some problem with the toshiba one. when i was in china early this year, i got a 256GB SM0256F APPLE SSD and a 3TB ST3000DM001 APPLE HDD from TaoBao, so i upgraded the drives again 2 months ago. hope this help, and sorry for my bad english...

im attaching a screen shot, as you guys can see, the i7-4771 can run really hot on this iMac, the CPU temp can reach 99 degrees celcius after a few minutes of stressing, but with no problem, i do play league fo legends and CS-GO at least 3 hours daily, and this imac never fail me.

Hi all,
After upgrading the similar imac fan rpm is now 1900 .. what did I do wrong?
How to make 1200 (normal imac state) Replace thermal compound?
Now imac with 1900 rpm more noisy((

Solution found! To install any Hdd in IMAC 5k you need

Hey Buddy, I know it´s been a while, better now than never, thank you for the reply!.
Maybe in the forthcoming months I might save some money and make a full upgrade to the iMac (Blade+SSD, and CPU).
How is going yours with the i7?.

Cheers.

Help!
I don't know if anyone is still reading this thread. This is what happened to me and what I have done so far.
iMac 2013 27" 3.5GHz Nvidia GT780M 4GB (This may or may not be important)

So the hinge failed on this machine and, knowing my way around the iMac and other machines, I decided to change it myself. Having purchased a new hinge and the required strips to reseal the machine once I'd finished I proceeded with caution.
Everything went smoothly.
New hinge in place I though - well whilst I've got it stripped downs so far, I may as well replace the thermal paste with some Arctic Silver 5. So I took the heat sink off, cleaned it up and reapplied.
On this model you have to put the CPU in the socket put the 'gunk' on. Put the heat sink on and then invert the whole logic board to insert the screws and spring from underneath.

Disaster! The CPU slipped and I wound up crushing the edge of the chip!

**** **** ****

Don't panic, stiff upper lip and all, lets get a new CPU before my wife finds out.

Amazon to the rescue. Now I found this thread and looking at the costs and delivery times I purchased the 4790 (Not the K) instead of the 4771 that was shipped in the machine.

Put it in and reassembled. Put in the power cable - 1 light. Pressed the start - 2 lights ..... ..... ..... ..... .....

So I understand that
LED 1. Trickle power
LED 2. Start button pressed - Main power on
LED 3. GPU found
LED 4. LCD found

So, I draw the conclusion that the mother board is damaged. (Seems logical to me). Ebay to the rescue. 4 days later a new mother board arrives with no CPU. i've just spent the afternoon switching the motherboards and CPU.

Put it in and reassembled. Put in the power cable - 1 light. Pressed the start - 2 lights ..... ..... ..... ..... .....

Exactly the same result as the old logic board. So maybe the logic board is not damaged after all. Now I have (apparently) 2 functioning logic boards and 1 CPU and they don't want to play.

Can anyone shed light on this?

In total I'm down over £600 and still don't have a working machine. Worst I don't know why.
Trying to predict the questions that may come.
Light 1 on when power cable connected
Start button pressed
Light 2 comes on
Fan spin up
Light 2 goes out
Fan stop
Light 2 comes on
Fans start
HD spins up
Fan spins faster
Fan reaches take off speed......

Why you trying different CPU? you should buy second 4771
I like Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut because is non conductive

I realize that you used AS5 for the CPU and GPU, But what thermal paste did you use on the VRAMs?

I thought you only need this if you got the imac without the fusion drive?

[doublepost=1514580897][/doublepost]Was there ever a explanation of this error? I have upgraded the cpu and have exactly the same problem, fans ramp up and the cpu is showing 70-80% load with nthing running. Tried smc and pram, clean os and reinstalled old cpu. 4000rpm fans every time :(

3 things are a minimum requirement for being able to use Broadwell CPU:

- Socket LGA 1150
- Same Chipset
- Equal or less TDP Power

Broadwell, I believe will have all 3 features common with Haswell. So, you should be able to upgrade when Broadwell CPUs come out next year.

I know this thread is 4 years old and sorry for re starting this! but do you think 4 watt difference in TDP power would work? Ive got a mid 2015 Imac and i want to do the same as you. They use the exact same boards as the late 2014 but just a different processor (intel i4590) not the Intel i5 4690! between the 4590 and the i7 4790k theres 4 TDP difference.

The OP has done something that is very interesting and useful to a lot of us who enjoy tinkering with computers.

I replaced the HD with a 1TB SSD, and controlled the fan speeds of my mid 2011 iMac I using the app mentioned above, but later I bought the temperature controller kit shown below, and could not be happier:
https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DIDIMACHDD11/

Hey Guys I've made it!Upgrade done! I7 4790K Inside! Same Thing! The only issue is the temperature. It hits easily 100 degrees on Benchmark test. I've used a TM30 Thermal Paste Corsair. Anything I can do to lower the temperature ? I also watched a video from a intel engineer and he said this kind of temperature is a FEATURE, like an auto overclocking after 80 degrees. Also I haven't notice a BIG DIFERENCE I would say ZERO in terms of performance compared to the I5 4690.

I don't know what to do.......
