So, I just purchased a Dell Ultra-Wide and love it, but the text just isn't retina like all my other devices... Then I visited the Apple Store and really loved the 5K display. I'm currently powering this Ultra-Wide with a MBPr, but I can take or leave the portability and I would imagine the 5K would be more powerful anyhow?

I've been itching for an iMac... Maybe get the new 12.9 iPad for portability?

Thoughts?

Not sure what you are asking? Powerful is a vague term.

Is the iMac going to be faster for browsing the web and most general use. The answer is no.
Is an i7 iMac with SSD going to handle editing 4K material better than your Macbook Pro? Yes

I guess I was asking what looks/functions better... iMac with 5K or this Dell... I think I answered it for myself. I love the Dell, but the text just isn't that crisp.

Which Dell did you get? I have a U2711 and a P2715Q. The first one is a wide gamut 1440p monitor and the text isn't that sharp. The second is a 4K display and it is very sharp. Possibly my rMBP is a bit sharper, but I've not compared the two side by side. For the money though I'm more than happy with the monitor and it means I don't have to have an iMac - personally I hate all in one computers.

Yeah, it kind of depends on what "ultrawide" really means.

Think of the 5k as a 2560x1440 monitor that's twice as sharp. Even without the pixel doubling, it's clearly more capacious than this monitor. And if you prefer a 2560x1440 display to a 1920*1080 monitor, than the 5k will be more to your liking than a 4k display.

Dell U3415W. Love the screen real-estate, but I love the retina text.

Hmm. "3440x1440". Does make it a tad more difficult to compare, then.

One interesting wrinkle is that in bootcamp, windows treats the 5k display as a 3840x2160 display.

Yeah, I may have to pull the trigger on a new iMac if Apple doesn't release a nice 4K monitor soon. The other 4K monitors that I've tried aren't that great.

Have a look at Dell's 4K offerings before you go get an iMac. They are much cheaper than getting an iMac and the quality is good. You won't notice the difference in the real world between 4k and 5k at typical viewing distances, but you will save a ton of cash by not going 5k right now. and if you really need the FaceTime camera then just get a webcam.

Well, I pulled the trigger on the Late 2015 iMac 5K i7 today... I love the Dell monitor, but when all my other products have retina displays, this Dell display just doesn't cut it.
