Hey guys I just got my iMac yesterday, and its been awesome, but I have one question. The classic "bong" sound at startup, i know that is the result of a successful POST, but mine didnt do one after the 1st startup. I had speakers plugged in to it when i started up the 2nd time, and no sound. I unplugged the speakers, and I got the sound. Is that normal or do I need to contact Apple? I jut want to make sure nothings wrong with my iMac. I checked the POST results in System Profiler and it said Passed, so any thoughts here?

I think by default that the start up sound is muted if you have speakers hooked up. The start up chime is really loud and if your speaker are on and turned up it could be bad. Now with my Mac Pro the start up chime still sounds from the computer.

When you have speakers plugged in its muted. When I have my sound turned up on the computer speaker its really loud, imagine if you had hardcore speakers plugged in and turned up?

I have the same thing. If my speakers are on, there's no sound.

BTW, when I boot my internal speakers are default ones and I have to select my speakers from System Preferences everytime. This happened after I installed Snow Leopard. Anyone know a fix?

hmm, i think its SL thats causing it... It does the sound without speakers plugged in, but never when they are plugged in. Im using some cheap Cyber Acoustics that use the 3.5mm jack on the back. I dont have to select the speakers when I start up, they are automatically detected... so is anyone else having problems with SL? Im thinking about downgrading to 10.5.8 because I lost two apps and fliqlo... SL seems to be running a bit more hotter and a bit more memory/CPU intensive.. Anyone notice this?
