Tried several time reloading but no success. Have wiped the HD clean (I think) and after that sequence all I get is a window that shows a Mouse and CD Disk unit. It highlights the on/off switches, thats it. Tried the reset sequence, nothing. This is very frustrating as all i wanted to do is wipe the HD clean so i can sell the unit. Where do I go from here....apart from the obvious. tx for any positive input would be appreciated

It's a 2012 imac.

I suggest you boot to INTERNET Recovery (command+OPTION+R at boot), and try a reinstall of the OS that way.

If you are unsure as to how to make internet recovery work, let us know and we'll advise you.

You CANNOT use "ordinary" (i.e., non-internet) recovery to erase the internal drive.
You must use internet recovery or boot from an external drive or USB flash drive.

Also, when using internet recovery, once the internet utilities are loaded, you need to
- open disk utility
- VERY IMPORTANT: go to the view menu (if there is one) and choose "show all devices"
- the top line is the internal drive -- that's what needs to be erased.
- erase the drive and quit disk utility, then open the installer.

Everymac.com indicates the most recent OS for the 2012 imac is 10.15 "Catalina".

I suggest that you install that -- NOT High Sierra.

Good luck.

One more thing:
If you're going to sell this, install the new OS.
You should get to the point where you see the initial setup screen "choose your language".
I recommend that you quit the installer at that point.
If you can't find any way to quit it, just reach around back, and press AND HOLD the power on button until the screen goes dark and the imac shuts off.
It's ready for the next owner.

Thanks for your detailed response, your time and input is appreciated. I am not even certain if it is connected to the internet as I no way to confirm this with the exciting window. I did follow the (command+OPTION+R at boot) sequence but for some reason I can no longer do this. I cannot see the WiFi connections, mouse or even the keyboard. All i get is what is showing in my video attached to my previous message/post. Now if i switch it on and keep my finger on the power button it switches on and will switch of, if i switch it on it will come on, show the apple logo and a loading bar under the logo. Once the load bar reaches near the end it stops a while like at least 2minutes then the screen changes to light gray and then changes to the apple logo with the load up bar for 12 seconds then it changes to the mouse snd cd screen (like the video I included here. Then thats it, I cannot do anything else with the computer. Nothing else is showing on the screen.

The Mac is not recognizing a mouse, so it shows you how to connect a Bluetooth mouse.
So either pair a Bluetooth mouse or connect a wired mouse.
Same with the keyboard.

I will also link to Apple's recommendation on how to correctly prepare a Mac for sale.
If you follow this guide step-by-step, you should be all set.

You could try a different keyboard and mouse. Might help, might not.

At 13 years old, might be time to start thinking of a replacement.

Thanks, but as mentioned I am in the process of selling this as i have a MacBook laptop do not need a desktop.
