iMac (aluminum) problems

The iMac i own turned off by itself, after a few attempts to turn it on, i finally got it on and the fans were on full....

... i had to turned it off and restart/disconnect power cords etc.

The computer was left on standby (sleep) and the only thing connected was a digital camera...

has anyone else had this happen, computer turned off/woulldn't wake, once you got it to turn on the fans were on full all the way up to login/ past login, is there something i should check?

it seems to be ok now, after looking thru apple support pages, i think it might be related to the SMC unit. I must have reset it and not even know,
