In my attempts to be brief, I've been burned by that before: Respond to a post, then the poster edits their post or deletes it, leaving mine not making much sense. Oh well! I suppose life WILL go on! 😀
Antivirus software can't protect you from identity theft, which can occur even if you don't own a computer. There are many techniques used to accomplish identity theft, many of which are available because the victim was not careful with their personal information.

Quick question - as part of the package I got a free full copy of Intego's Internet Security barrier x6 and although I realise the beauty of macs is the lack of virus's, I presume as it's free it won't hurt to install it and be completely safe?

You don't need it, and it will use system resources that are better used for something productive. Read the link in post #21. That's all you need to know about protecting your Mac from malware.
