For a while now, I've been wanting to use my iMac as not only an external monitor for another computer on occasion, but also as a TV for playing Xbox. Well, I know that you can use an EyeTV to use an Xbox (by the way, wondering if anyone knows if the quality of playing Xbox on your iMac through an EyeTV, please tell me), so I was wondering if you can solve everyone's question about using an iMac as an external monitor by just hooking it up to an EyeTV and then using the three color component input with a DVI or VGA to component adapter and then hooking that up to the monitor? Not only would that be a great way to hook up your mac as an external monitor, but you could also eliminate the need for a switcher for using two computers with one monitor.

I can see how this solution can have possible issues, like if your iMac is not working and that is the reason you want to use it as an external monitor, or if you are using something CPU intensive, so it would lag up, but I think it would be a better solution than a VNC.

But hey, if you have an EyeTV and a DVI/VGA to component adapter, then are you willing to try it for the good of everyone? Also, anyone else have any good ideas to make this better?

Sounds like it would work. I'm stil holding onto a mac mini because it easy to share a monitor with my quad core PC that I use for video encoding. I want to upgrade to a 24" imac but don't really want it and a monitor setting on my desk.

On the other hand, for what I do, the "teamViewer" software is probably fine.
