iMac as external monitor

Hey guys,

I have a late-2008 macbook(10.5.8) and i want to get a new iMac(21.5 or 27-inch). What cable do i need to use the iMac as a external monitor? am i stuck with screen sharing software?

I know this question gets asked a lot but i couldn't find a convincing answer so any help would be greatly appreciated!
